TOJ’s Burning Questions Heading into Jets-Bucs

Check out Stephen’s reaction to the Jets’ win over the Jags!

In this week’s burning questions column, TOJ Live Co-Host Stephen Zantz will be addressing the burning questions surrounding the team heading into Jaguars week. The Jets topped to the Jaguars 26-21 which has them at 4-11 on the season.

How should a Jets fan feel after winning their way out of a top 2 pick? Despite a win, there are a lot of fans disappointed that Kayvon Thibodeaux and Aidan Hutchinson are now unlikely to being wearing green and white next year. It’s 100% understandable given the Jets’ history of winning late season games which result in them losing out on a better prospect (see 2018 and 2020 seasons). As someone who preferred a loss yesterday, I think fans should still be happy. The Jets were missing so many players and their head coach. They showed you something they’ve been lacking for a few weeks now: heart. They were decimated on the offensive line and found a way to rush for nearly 300 yards. Zach Wilson was extremely solid in managing the game and executing the plan of attack. Ron Middleton was a fun story and deserves a lot of credit. I know it will sting in April when we settle for a non edge prospect but you need to find a way to change the mindset in a young locker room and this was a big step in the right direction.

Why haven’t we heard about Braxton Berrios contract extension yet? The Jets need to do everything in their power to not allow Braxton Berrios to leave this offseason. He has been terrific both as a special teams player and offensive weapon when given an opportunity. He was robbed of being a pro bowler but thankfully was named 1st team alternate. He is quickly becoming a fan favorite and the Jets cannot pull an Andre Roberts again by not bringing back their spark plug on specials. His kickoff return for a touchdown was electric and he always seems to catch the ball whenever it’s thrown his way. He seems like one of the most beloved guys in the locker room (see the reaction to Saleh post game saying his name when addressing the team). The Jets cannot screw this one up because he can certainly be the starting slot in 2022 in addition to their ace return specialist.

Should Jason Pinnock start at safety the final two games? As someone who has been overly critical of Jason Pinnock this season as a corner, I would be lying if I didn’t say I was impressed with him as a safety against the Jaguars. Given the Jets have been a revolving door at safety all season, you cannot go wrong giving Pinnock an audition for the full time gig in 2022 or even as a backup there. He has been horrible this season as corner getting beat consistently and committing silly penalties. Yesterday was by far his best performance of the season. It easily could be an outlier and he can revert back to his usual self against Tampa. I still would give him another shot since Ashtyn Davis has failed to assert himself as a legit option as a starter. Let’s hope this could be the sign of something for the future.

Do the Jets have any shot against the Bucs in Week 17? An old foe is coming back to MetLife where has tortured Jet fans for 20 years as a member of the Patriots. Tom Brady may never play the Jets again in his career and no doubt would like to stick it to us one more time. The line opened up at 13 which means Vegas thinks the Jets are going to get waxed. They are probably right but I will say the Jets will be getting a ton of guys back this week including Elijah Moore and the Bucs are extremely banged up. I don’t think the Jets will win but I would like to see them compete a bit with a top tier team. The Texans just beat the Chargers so you can’t rule anything out. Zach Wilson picking on a weaker than usual Bucs secondary would be a nice New Year’s treat.
