TOJ’s #BurningQuestions Heading into Jets-Eagles

TOJ Live Co-Host Stephen Zantz will be addressing the burning questions surrounding the team heading into Eagles week.

In this week’s burning questions column, TOJ Live Co-Host Stephen Zantz will be addressing the burning questions surrounding the team heading into Eagles week. The Jets defeated the Texans 21-14 for their 3rd win on the season.

What is up with Zach Wilson and why did he start off so flat? I think there re a few things here to look at. The first thing to address here is Zach hadn’t played live football in a full month. Nothing he was doing in practice is going to be what he experienced yesterday which is definitely a reason he looked off to start. Secondly, I think mentally he is still trying to clear the hurdle with his PCL since it wasn’t repaired and just rehabbed. This is clearly something on his mind and will be going forward. Lastly, he is not trusting his reads. He made the same mistakes he did pre-injury which led to sacks and bad decisions. That INT was inexcusable and he needs to be smarter with the football. Let’s see how he comes next week at home.

Who is Austin Walter and where has he been all our lives? Yesterday was the ultimate feel good story for Austin Walter, an undrafted free agent out of Rice in 2019. Walter grew up in Houston and had a ton of family in attendance to see him score his first career NFL touchdown. Prior to being on the Jets, he spent time with Giants and 49ers as well as the Dallas Renegades in the XFL. I remember seeing Walter in training camp get some carries and was like to myself “This guy has some speed” but never imagined him getting real playing time. After yesterday, he absolutely deserves more playing time until Michael Carter is healthy and also someone the Jets should look to bring back for 2022 camp. He also has an incredible IG handle @groovyyybabyyy paying homage to Austin Powers.

How did the staff bench Quincy Williams for Jarrad Davis? This was a case of Joe Douglas and Saleh trying to justify their first free agency signing despite the writing on the wall for him sucking. Davis simply is a backup at best despite being a 1st round pick a few years back. Enough about him, let’s talk about big Q. Back on cut day when the Jags cut Quincy, I said the Jets were a lock to snag him jokingly as a part of the Quinnen extension negotiations. Little did I know, this man is one helluva linebacker. Every play this man is hitting hard and running all over the field alongside CJ Mosley. Lucky for the Jets, they have Quincy locked in for 2022 on a salary of $965k. The Jets may even look ahead (depending on the final 6 games) to extend Quincy. I’m in favor of this because that could make the Q negotiations smoother. What a find for JD and the front office!

When are the Jets going to pull the plug on Matt Ammendola? I hope that by the time you are reading this, the Jets beat has broken the news that Matt Ammendola has been released. With all due respect to Matt, he flat out sucks and is not capable of being an NFL kicker. He has missed way too many kicks that could have altered games for the Jets specifically last week vs Miami. A few available kickers the Jets should workout include Sam Sloman (on PIT PS), Eddy Pineiro, & Josh Lambo. I can’t watch Matt Ammendola attempt another field goal anymore. It’s simply infuriating! Also, Braden Mann sucks too. Let’s bring back Thomas Morstead.
