Know Your Opponent: Denver Broncos

Michael Meegan previews the Denver Broncos

The Jets do not have many happy memories in Denver. After last weeks 4 INT debacle for Zach Wilson so it’s going to be an uphill climb for the Jets to change their fortunes.

Coaching: Vic Fangio is the HC for Denver as well as their defensive playcaller. He is maybe the best defensive mind in today’s NFL. His split safety defense that is based on limiting explosive plays is now being copied all over the NFL. Pat Shurmur  is the Broncos OC, and while he has failed as a HC, he is a perfectly capable OC, getting career years out of bad QB’s like Case Keenum and Daniel Jones.

Offense: Teddy Bridgewater looks like a different man in Denver. He is chucking the ball all over the yard instead of his usual game manager routine. The Jets catch a break with Jerry Jeudy out but Cortland Sutton, KJ Hamler, Tim Patrick, and Noah Fant is still a fantastic group of pass catchers that’s will certainly test the Jets’ young corners. Javonte Williams was my favorite RB in last year’s draft, and combining him with Melvin Gordon behind a decent OL makes for a really well balanced offense.

Defense: This Denver defense is scary. This guy named Von Miller who’s been terrorizing the NFL for a decade now is still really good, even after missing last year. However, Bradley Chubb being out is a massive help for the Jets. This secondary is the best in the NFL. Kyle Fuller was a first team All-Pro his last year under Fangio, while Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson maybe the best safety duo in football. In addition, Patrick Surtain Jr. has looked like a stud since day one after being taken 9th overall this April. They also have Ronald Darby which just shows how crazy this depth is.

Weaknesses: What makes Denver so scary is they don’t have a glaring weakness. Their OL is alright but it’s not a great unit. The Jets DL needs to really show out in this game for the Jets to have a chance. We need the real Quinnen Williams to please stand up.

Matchup: After seeing what the Patriots did to Zach Wilson last week, all Jets fans should be terrified of what Fangio can do to him. He embarrassed Trevor Lawrence last week and Zach’s decision making needs to be much improved if he wants to escape without another multi interception outing. The Jets defense has been a pleasant surprise and if they can hold this Denver offense in check it will be a massive statement that it can be middle of the pack defense this year which given their personnel would be a massive win for Robert Saleh and Jeff Ulbrich.

Prediction: I think Zach will play a more efficient game this week but this defense is just too good to expect a breakout game. I think the Jets defense again punches above its weight but it’s not enough and the Jets fall to the Broncos 21-10.
