Okay Jets fans…. buckle up as what I am about to say may not be a popular position. The Jets should hire the former Eagles coach, who was fired by the team last night to be their next head coach. Pederson would bring successful head coaching experience, a Super Bowl ring as a head coach and the leadership that is needed to rebuild the NY Jets.
Looking at the candidates that the Jets interviewed, there are really none, with the exception of former Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, who have head coaching experience. Lewis would not be the right candidate for the position while Pederson makes the most sense. Of the other coordinators that have been interviewed for the Jets opening, only Eric Bieniemy and Robert Saleh would make the most sense for this team. I worry that these two coordinators are unproven with regards to any NFL head coaching experience and that there are going to be multiple offers for the services of these coaches. If there is, I doubt the Jets’ opening is the most attractive landing spot for either man.Adding to the people who have been interviewed thus far by the Jets are the candidates who should be interviewed but have yet to be. One name on that list, as reported by the NY Post if Ravens DC Wink Martindale, who would make perfect sense for the Jets to interview and hire. Other candidates that the Jets should at least look into interviewing should be Urban Meyer and Bill Cowher. They are some of the only big name coaches with great experience to consider and of course, they are not interviewed by Jets brass.
The situation with Pederson reminds me of two years ago when the Jets last had a head coaching opening. There was an experienced Super Bowl-winning coach in Mike McCarthy, who was fired by the Packers, who no one was really considering as their top candidate that the Jets could have hired. In fact, he publicly stated that he would accept the Jets job if offered to him. Jets fans ranted about that possibility and the fact that another coach should be hired and we got Adam Gase. Does anyone remember how that turned out? The same could happen with a coordinator if that is the direction the team takes in their eventual selection for a head coach.
Pederson has ties to Jets GM Joe Douglas from their time together in Philadelphia and Pederson would be able to have the experience as a head coach to be able to be the CEO coach that the Johnson brothers and Douglas are looking for in a head coach. This hire would make the most sense, as did the McCarthy potential hiring two years ago. There are no splashy names in the Jets coaching search and with whatever other teams are looking to contact Pederson, the Jets better act fast. Pederson to the Jets is the best head coaching hire the Jets could make this off-season and management better not screw it up.
