Initial Reaction to the Jets Hiring Robert Saleh as Head Coach

Will Parkinson gives his take on the Jets hiring 49ers Defensive Coordinator Robert Saleh to be the their next Head Coach.

The Jets get their man! Robert Saleh is officially the Head Coach of the New York Jets! This is a massive hire for the green and white. Saleh who has been serving as the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator since 2017 has been one of the most sought-after candidates on the market this offseason. After taking over in 2017 and inheriting the league’s worst defense in terms of yards allowed, he quickly turned the ship around. By 2019, the 49ers finished the season ranked 2nd in total yards. Saleh also led the 49ers defense to a top 10 ranking in Yards Per Game, 3rd Down percentage, and defensive efficiency.

He is known for his intense leadership, being a master communicator, all while being able to adapt his game plan. He is a great fit for the New York market as well as what the Jets were looking for. Saleh has learned under great NFL systems like that of Pete Carrol and Kyle Shanahan, which should translate to a highly effective scheme, but above all else an excellent culture. Former players like Richard Sherman, Joe Staley, and former boss John Lynch speak incredibly highly of the man and the football coach Robert Saleh. Fans should be looking forward to both the Jets defense play but also the excitement of bringing in Mike LaFleur as Saleh’s top offensive assistant.

LaFleur has been a hot name in NFL coaching circles because of his work as the passing game coordinator under Kyle Shanahan. He brings a west coast, zone running scheme, with lots of ideas and tricks up his sleeve. All week guys like Quinnen Williams and Mehki Becton have been approving this potential hire and, like the Jets fan base, we can all breathe a sigh of relief tonight.
