Jets vs. Chargers – Reasons to Watch & Betting Card

Stephen Zantz with prop bets for Jets vs Chargers…

There isn’t a lot to take from Jet games anymore, but I wanted to highlight a few things that can make this game somewhat watchable. I also included some betting card picks to help Jet fans gain more interest.

Denzel Mims’ Offensive Involvement – It took a while to get Mims on the field, but we are seeing glimpses of why he was considered a strong receiver prospect heading into the 2020 draft. Gase seems to like to feature Mims during the scripted portion of the game and fades him out. Why he continues to do this is another story. When given an opportunity, Mims has shown to be a very physical player both as a receiver and as a blocker. This is Joe Flacco does have the ability to take deep shots down the field which can result in some fun Mims 50/50 balls or acrobatic catches. The Chargers secondary is depleted without Chris Harris and Derwin James, so Mims will have opportunities to make some plays. Trevor Lawrence will love Denzel in 2021.

Young Edge Rushers – The Jets have been searching for a consistent pass rush since the days of Shaun Ellis & John Abraham. There aren’t any studs on this roster, but there are few intriguing young building blocks. John Franklin-Myers & Bryce Huff have both been pleasant surprises for the Jets as they have showed some promise in a lost season. Jabari Zuniga is finally healthy, so he deserves a chance to prove his worth. The Chargers’ offensive line is average at best, so Gregg Williams will look to use exotic blitzes to confuse a rookie QB. If the Jets don’t get to the QB, Justin Herbert is going to torch them to shreds with his plethora of weapons.

Mekhi Becton – This mammoth of a human requires zero introduction as he has looked like a homerun draft pick. It was unfortunate that Becton left the New England game early, but he seems to be 100% fine following the bye week. When watching football, fans typically aren’t watching the offensive linemen go to work. Becton has become must watch tv with his ability to pancake and bully even some of the NFL’s best linebackers & defensive linemen. Just ask Frank Clark & Ed Oliver what they think of Becton. Since no fan cares about Joe Flacco, take a look at his blindside protector and you will get some fun highlights to enjoy.

Betting Card Picks (Lines Courtesy of DK Sportsbook):

Justin Herbert O277.5 Pass Yds – The Jets have an atrocious secondary and Herbert has been putting up huge passing days despite the Chargers being 2-7. I would be absolutely stunned if Herbert is under 300 yards passing this week.

Mike Williams O52.5 Rec Yds – Echoing my point about the Jets secondary above, the Chargers have great weapons in the pass game. You can make an argument that Keenan Allen will also go over his total (71.5) but I think Williams is a safer play.

Frank Gore O8.5 Carries – When you watch an Adam Gase coached team week in and week out, there is one constant. Frank Gore will get a million carries. The fact Perine’s total is at 12.5 and Gore’s is at 8.5 is laughable. This should hit before halftime.

Joe Flacco U1.5 Pass TDs – I don’t envision the Jets scoring a lot of points this week so I feel confident that Flacco will throw 1 TD or less. The New England game is anomaly and we know Gase isn’t great after the bye week.

Kalen Ballage TD Scorer – This pick just seems like a formality. Kalen Ballage seems like a surprising addition to the #GaseFreedomWatch list. The odds aren’t on DK as of 1:47 Friday but I believe it’s a great play.
