New York Jets Loss Vent, Week 2 – We Need More Of These Losses

Joe Caporoso with a week 2 loss vent and why the New York Jets need more losses like they one they just had to the San Francisco 49ers…

Another week, another lifeless blowout loss (of course). On to it…

Does The Coach Still Suck?

Yes. The Jets are going to run the exact same offense every single week no matter what happens in terms of personnel, game situation or injuries. We also found out Sam Darnold isn’t allowed to audible on 4th and i at this stage of his career. Gase is basically treating him like a 6th round rookie as the Jets offense remains a snooze fest of bubble screens, A gap runs and redundant 11 personnel sets with no motion or pre-snap shifts.

For the question all you good people always ask – When is Gase getting fired and why isn’t he fired yet? Personally, I don’t think Chris Johnson is going to fire him during the season no matter what. The Jets have not fired a coach during the season since the Johnsons took over ownership, there are open questions about their financial situation related to the team and who is actually in charge with Woody sitting in the UK awaiting November election results and you have Chris exhibiting elite stubbornness on not admitting his mistake on hiring Gase. Crazier things have happened and maybe if they get blown out by Denver’s backups on national television in week 4, something changes and if not then, maybe if they hit the bye week at 2-8, 1-9 or 0-10…maybe.

But ask yourself this, what is the incentive for Chris Johnson to own his mistake and fire Gase right now? The Jets are one of the most profitable teams in the NFL, there are no fans boycotting games this season because there are no fans at the Stadium (and attendance doesn’t drive the real revenue anyway), there is not intense pressure from the local media to fire Gase. Yes, they are a laughingstock nationally but the Jets are famously dialed into their local beat/papers and I don’t see any major groundswell to fire him, do you? He can sit on the decision and him or Woody can potentially use Gase as an (appropriate) scapegoat after the season. If they fire him now, there is less chatter about him and more about the ownership and front office.

The Sam Meter

He is still somewhere between 3.8 and 4.2 for me. Sam was OK against San Francisco and if you are lauding it as anything more, than man is the bar low these days. Right now (not fully at the fault of his own) he is operating a slow tempo, high school, check down offense that only scores one touchdown per game in garbage time.

WTF Statistics Of The Week

  • 17 snaps for Avery Williamson while Alec Ogletree is the starter at ILB
  • The Jets have 0 touchdowns this season when they are not losing by at least 17 points.
  • Gase is 20-30 in his last 50 games as a NFL Head Coach.
  • 9 of Gase’s 11 losses with the Jets have been by double digits.
