New York Jets – 2020 Record Prediction (Training Camp Edition)

Matthew Marciano lays out his 2020 game by game prediction for the New York Jets…

We are close to the start of another NFL season and with the start of new season for the Jets comes predictions of how the Jets will do this year. There are a lot of story lines for the Jets this season that needs to be answered. Among them will be if head coach Adam Gase is the right coach for the job and whether the offense will improve in year two under Gase.

Other questions surrounding the Jets will be how quarterback Sam Darnold, in his third NFL season will perform this year with what appears to be a depleted receivers corps, even after the Jets signed veteran wide out Chris Hogan.

Plus, while the drama with Jamal Adams is no over since the Jets traded the disgruntled safety to the Seattle Seahawks, the question still remains if the defense will continue to improve without Adams in Defensive Coordinator’s Gregg Williams second year with the Jets. It will also prove to be an interesting story line when Adams and Seahawks play host to the Jets later on in the season during week fourteen.

Here are the predictions for the 2020 NY Jets season and how the Jets will fare in each of their match ups against opposing teams.

Week One @ Buffalo Bills

One cannot forget the Jets opening their season last year against the Bills, blowing the lead and losing their first game to Buffalo at home. In many ways that game set the tone for a long season for the Jets, which resulted in a 7-9 2019 season record.

This year the Jets once again open their season against the Bills, this time at Buffalo. While many people have predicted the Bills to be the new favorite in the AFC East, now that Tom Brady is no longer on the Patriots, it also seems that the Bills are a bit overrated and can only benefit from being a competitive team in what is now a very weak division.

This game will be tough for both teams, especially since there were no preseason games leading up to the season, due to the Covid19 pandemic, but it looks like the Jets will get the better of the Bills to start the season.

Prediction: Jets 20, Bills 17

Week Two vs San Francisco 49ers

This game will be the home opener for the Jets against the NFC Champion 49ers. In this match up, it will be important for the Jets to find ways to protect quarterback Sam Darnold in the pocket. Nick Bosa and the 49ers defense will find a way to give the Jets offense headaches all day, in what will be a low-scoring affair at MetLife Stadium.

Prediction: 49ers 16, Jets 3

Week Three @ Colts

The Jets travel to Indianapolis to play Phillip Rivers and the Colts. Rivers, who is in his first year on the Colts after leading the Los Angeles Chargers for years, is a great veteran quarterback who can never be counted out. However, in this game, the Jets defense will be too much for the Rivers and the Colts and the Jets will come up on top in this match up.

Prediction: Jets 24, Colts 17

Week Four vs. Broncos (Thursday Night Football)

This game has the making of a Jets blowout against quarterback Drew Lock and the Denver Broncos in prime time on Thursday Night Football. The Jets defense will be giving Lock and the Broncos all night, and will be getting some turnovers and Sam Darnold will have a great night against the Broncos, resulting in a Jets victory.

Prediction: Jets 27, Broncos: 6

Week Five vs. Cardinals

The Jets conclude their back-to-back home games against Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals. This game also appears to be a big victory for the Jets, as the Murray is still a work in progress as it comes to quarterback play, which the Jets defense will take advantage of. This will lead to another Jets victory at home before going to Los Angeles to play the Chargers.

Prediction: Jets 20, Cardinals 3

Week Six @ Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers are now a work in progress due to the team releasing long-time veteran quarterback Phillip Rivers after last season. There are still question marks as to who will be the starting quarterback this season for the Chargers, with Tyrod Taylor being the most likely starter at the moment. In what will be a mostly defensive battle between both teams, the Jets will eek out a win.

Prediction: Jets 16, Chargers 13

Week Seven vs Buffalo Bills

The Jets in recent memory have not done well against the Bills and that is in part due to quarterback play. Sam Darnold and Bills Quarterback Josh Allen were both drafted three years ago and Allen has been, in some ways more consistent in his overall play compared to Darnold. The Jets defense will keep the Jets in the game, but the Bills will have the better of the Jets in this second game between both teams.

Prediction: Bills 24, Jets 14

Week Eight @ Kansas City Chiefs

If there is ever a game on the schedule that right off the bat the Jets are going to lose, it is this game against Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and the defending Super Bowl Champion Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs offense will have a field day against the Jets and the Chiefs will never even keep the Jets in this game from the opening kickoff.

Prediction: Chiefs 35, Jets 3

Week Nine vs New England Patriots (Monday Night Football)

The Jets play host to the Patriots on Monday Night Football. The big question in this game will be how the Jets do against the Patriots, in their first game without having to face Tom Brady. Patriots coach Bill Belichick recently hinted at using more than one quarterback as his starter this season, but it would appear that the starting quarterback job would be Cam Newton’s to lose. Newton and the Patriots will have a big night, beating the Jets in prime time.

Prediction: Patriots 23, Jets 6

Week Ten @ Miami Dolphins

Jets head coach heads back to Miami to the play team he used to lead in the Dolphins. The Dolphins and the Jets split their series last year and Sam Darnold and the offense will have a good day against the Dolphins defense and another team that is currently in rebuilding mode.

Prediction: Jets 24, Dolphins 14

Week Eleven BYE WEEK

Week Twelve vs Miami Dolphins

One of the oddities on the Jets schedule when it was released, is the Jets playing the Dolphins twice in three weeks. That does not seem to make sense and it appears very rare to see that type of quirk on an NFL schedule. That being said, the Jets always find a way to lose a game after a bye week, when they should be rested and ready to play their next opponent after a bye. This game will be no exception and the Jets will find a way to lose to the Dolphins at home.

Prediction: Dolphins 17, Jets 10

Week Thirteen vs Las Vegas Raiders

This game should be circled on the Jets calendar as an easy win, among all of the games on the Jets schedule this year. The Jets play host to the Las Vegas Raiders and it will be interesting to see if the Raiders starting quarterback for this game will be either Derek Carr or Marcus Mariota. Either way it will not make much of a difference in the end result as the Jets defense will have the better of either quarterback in this match up, resulting in an easy win for the Jets.

Prediction: Jets 30, Raiders 3

Week Fourteen @ Seattle Seahawks

This will be a big story line game for the Jets as they travel to Seattle to play former Jet Jamal Adams and the Seattle Seahawks. With or without Adams on their roster, the Seahawks, led by quarterback Russell Wilson, will have an easy day against the Jets defense, resulting in a Seahawks victory.

Prediction: Seahawks 27, Jets 6

Week Fifteen @ Los Angeles Rams

The Jets travel to Los Angeles in their second of back-to-back west coast games to play the Rams. This game is a tough one to predict, as the Jets will keep this game close against the Rams, who struggled last season, after making it to the Super Bowl the year before. Expect Jared Goff and the Rams to win a close one against the Jets.

Prediction: Rams 17, Jets 13

Week Sixteen vs Cleveland Browns

This is another game that was tough to call as the teams are pretty much evenly matched, especially at the quarterback position, as this match up features two quarterbacks drafted in the same year, Sam Darnold and the Browns Baker Mayfield. Mayfield has, like Darnold, been an inconsistent quarterback for the Browns and the Jets defense will prove the difference in what will be a Jets victory.

Prediction: Jets 17, Browns 7

Week Seventeen @ New England Patriots

The Jets end their season, for the second straight season, on the road and play the Patriots. This will be an interesting game as the Patriots may still be fighting for a playoff spot or both teams have been mathematically eliminated to be in the playoffs. Either way, the Patriots will find another way to get the better of the Jets in this match up.

Prediction: Patriots 23, Jets 3

Overall Jets 2020 Prediction Record

8-8 and miss the playoffs

It appears that the Jets will have a similar record like they did last year, but any record that does not result in the playoffs, or even have the Jets come close to making the playoffs, should result in Jets ownership looking to make a coaching change. The Jets will also have to look at the progression of Sam Darnold after this season, to see if he is the long-term solution for the Jets at quarterback. This could be another tough season for the Jets and if so, the ownership will have to step up and make some important personnel changes.
