In what’s really their first surprise pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, the New York Jets selected S Ashtyn Davis from California with the 68th overall pick. Davis is the first defensive pick of the draft for the Jets and was expected by many to go in the second round. The question now is: where does he play in Gregg Williams defense?
Ashtyn Davis was a walk-on at California and in four seasons had 7 INTs and forced 2 fumbles. The keyword for Ashtyn Davis might be versatility both as an athlete and a defensive back. As an athlete, Davis is track star. He’s an All-American hurdler and is rumored to be one of the fastest players in this year’s draft. Because of an injury, he wasn’t able to test at the combine or at his pro day.As a defensive back, Davis most likely comes in as depth at free safety which is a reasonable consideration given the past health issues that have plagued current starting safety, Marcus Maye. It’s also rumored that NFL teams wanted to work Davis out at cornerback. That kind of versatility perhaps it what the Jets had in mind here. He could be an immediate option as a sub-package DB with the upside of taking over at free safety. It would appear the Jets have done a lot of work on Davis to make this selection given the injury and the position. Can’t wait to see what Gregg Williams has in mind here.
