New York Jets 53 Man Roster Prediction – August 7th Edition

Joe Caporoso with a revised 53 man roster prediction for the New York Jets (August 7th Edition)

With a little over one week of New York Jets training camp in the books, including the Green and White Scrimmage, let’s take a revised stab at the 53 man roster in advance of the team’s first preseason game…

Quarterback (2) – Sam Darnold, Josh McCown: Darnold ends up starting week one and the Jets find a way to trade Teddy Bridgewater at some point before the season starts. Josh McCown stays on as the backup.

Running Back (5) – Isaiah Crowell, Bilal Powell, Elijah McGuire, Trenton Cannon, Lawrence Thomas: Training camp star Cannon sticks after a big summer. McGuire is healthy by week one and Thomas is able to hang on to his starting fullback job, narrowly beating out Dmitri Flowers who ends up on the practice squad.

Wide Receiver (6) – Robby Anderson, Quincy Enunwa, Jermaine Kearse, Terrelle Pryor, Chad Hansen, Andre Roberts: Enunwa is healthy by week one (if not the third or fourth preseason game). Roberts begins the season as the returner but is potentially replaced in week three by Cannon in that role with ArDarius Stewart taking his roster spot when he returns from suspension. No other surprises stick despite a strong start to camp for Tre McBride.

Tight End (4) – Eric Tomlinson, Chris Herndon, Neal Sterling, Clive Walford: The Jets end up carrying four, at least to start the season with 2017 draft pick Jordan Leggett being the odd man out, as he continues to struggle with injuries.

Offensive Tackle (4) – Kelvin Beachum, Brandon Shell, Brent Qvale, Ben Ijalana: Hopefully we are not seeing too much of Ijalana this season as Beachum is dealing with training camp walking boot. All four of these players have starting experience.

Offensive Guard (3) – James Carpenter, Brian Winters, Dakota Dozier: No surprises here. Dozier has previously been utilized occasionally in short yardage sets.

Center (2) – Spencer Long, Travis Swanson: The Jets hang on to two centers due to Long’s injury history. If we need to see any Swanson though there will be Wesley Johnson flashbacks.

Defensive Line (6) – Leonard Williams, Steve McLendon, Natan Shepherd, Henry Anderson, Mike Pennel, Xavier Cooper: The Jets end up keeping six  at this position and heavily rotate at every position around Leonard Williams. Rookie Folorunso Fatukasi sticks on the practice squad.

Inside Linebacker (4) – Darron Lee, Avery Williamson, Kevin Minter, Kevin Pierre-Louis: Despite early injuries in camp, Pierre-Louis makes it for his special teams ability and the team carries four at this position, with Minter sticking around for veteran insurance.

Outside Linebacker (4) – Jordan Jenkins, Josh Martin, Frankie Luvu, Brandon Copeland,: Luvu is the surprise roster spot (UDFA out of Washington State), beating out recent draft picks like Lorenzo Mauldin and Dylan Donahue as the Jets try to add more speed off the edge.

Corner (6) – Trumaine Johnson, Morris Claiborne, Buster Skrine, Parry Nickerson, Derrick Jones, Daryl Roberts: Jones has been one of the best stories in camp and could be first up for reps on the outside if Claiborne or Johnson get hurt.

Safety (4) – Jamal Adams, Marcus Maye, Terrence Brooks, Doug Middleton: The Jets go with four until Rontez Miles returns from injury. JJ Wilcox narrowly misses the roster.

Specials (3) – Cairo Santos, Lachlan Edwards, Thomas Hennessy
