Initial Reaction – New York Jets Trade For Zac Stacy, Draft Deon Simon

Joe Caporoso on the New York Jets trading for RB Zac Stacy and drafting DT Deon Simon

The New York Jets wrapped up their 2015 NFL Draft by trading a 7th round pick to the St. Louis Rams for RB Zac Stacy and then using their other pick to select DT Deon Simon out of Northwestern. Thoughts on the moves…

1. There were rumors earlier in the day about the Jets having interest in Stacy, who through two NFL seasons has 1,266 rushing yards with a 3.9 YPC, along with 44 catches for 293 yards. He has 9 career touchdowns but fell to the bottom of the Rams depth chart after selections of Tre Mason and Todd Gurley. The Jets now have Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell, Stevan Ridley, Stacy and Daryl Richardson…depth. At some point, one or two of these guys will likely be let go. However, it will be interesting seeing how they are used throughout the summer. The Jets still lack a back who is dynamic in the passing game but they may just count on Powell in that role for this season.

2. Here is a little more on Simon, who enters a CROWDED defensive line rotation. He will be competing with TJ Barnes and recent additions like Kevin Vickerson for a potential spot on the roster. Simon could very well end up being a candidate for the practice squad in his rookie year, considering the Jets current depth.

The final Jets haul from this weekend:

  • DL: Leonard Williams
  • WR: Devin Smith
  • WR: DeVier Posey
  • Edge: Lorenzo Mauldin
  • QB: Bryce Petty
  • OG: Jarvis Harrison
  • RB: Zac Stacy
  • NT: Deon Simon
