Initial Reaction – New York Jets Beat Giants…And?

The New York Jets beat the New York Giants today 34-27 in a back and forth, sloppy football game, moving their record to 2-7 and dropping the Giants record to 2-8. After a fast start from Sam Darnold and the offense, the Jets managed to hold on, thanks mostly to a looting of Daniel Jones by Jamal Adams and a total shut down of the Giants “generational” starting back Saquon Barkley, who had less rushing yards than Trevon Wesco on the day. What does the win mean in the grand scheme of things?

The New York Jets are in a tough spot right now as an organization. They were supposed to be competitive this season after their most important offseason in decades. They’ve been almost the complete opposite under head coach Adam Gase. There have been many excuses for their poor start but those excuses often don’t paint the whole picture. Let’s discuss why there may not be much of reason to use the “wait and see” approach this time.

Sam Darnold has regressed. As I have stated before, it’s not time to hit the panic button, but he has clearly taken a step backward from where he finished the season in 2018. This is not to say it can’t be salvaged. It absolutely can. Sam Darnold will still be a good quarterback in this league. Possibly a great one. However, we can’t turn a blind eye to the facts.
