Weekend Video Clips: Pay The Man

First a few updates:

1. The Jets officially signed Laveranues Coles today but he admitted in a statement there is a good chance he could be released after the first four games. It is surprising the Jets were so up front with him about it and this also means there is a good chance of a guy like David Clowney or Danny Woodhead sticking around on the roster.

2. The Jets have extended the contract of Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum through the 2014 season.

3. Jason Taylor will wear #99 this season. Bryan Thomas will wear #58.

In honor of the report that the Jets and Darrelle Revis have opened the lines of communication again in hopes of settling his contract dispute before training camp, this week’s edition of Weekend Video Clips is devoted Revis Island.

Thoughts On Jets Adding Laveranues Coles

1. Follow Turn On The Jets on Facebook and Twitter (TurnOnTheJets). Also, check out the new edition of Turn On The Jets TV, which should have your heart pumping through your chest.

2. A friendly reminder that training camp starts this Monday in Cortland, New York. The Jets will have practice at Florham Park on August 23rd and August 24th, along with at Hofstra on August 25th. Hard Knocks starts on August 11th at 10 PM and the Jets first pre-season game is on August 16th against the Giants.

Thoughts On Jets Adding Laveranues Coles

Rich Cimini of ESPN New York reported today that the Jets will be working out wide receiver Laveranues Coles tomorrow and are expected to sign him shortly after. This was a move that was speculated throughout the off-season, both before and after the Santonio Holmes trade. Last season on Cincinnati, Coles finished with 43 receptions, 514 yards, and 5 touchdowns. This would be his third tour of duty with the Jets.

I have always been a big of fan of LC, because of his toughness and ability to go over the middle. The decision to sign Coles, clearly indicates the Jets aren’t comfortable with David Clowney being the #3 receiver from weeks 1 – 4 while Santonio Holmes serves his suspension. Personally, I think Clowney would have been fine in that role and that he provides more speed than Coles. However, Coles is still a better overall wide receiver and should be very good in the slot because of his quickness, hands, and ability to run after the catch.

The real question is, what is Coles going to do after week four? First off, how about the lineup of receivers the Jets will trot out against the Minnesota Vikings in week five? Braylon Edwards, Jerricho Cotchery, Santonio Holmes, Laveranues Coles, and Brad Smith, wow…that is some collection of talent and depth. I am sure Coles understands there will be a minimal number of passes coming his way over the last 12 games. Yet, I am sure Brian Schottenheimer can get creative with a few four receiver packages that will keep Coles in the weekly game-plan. Also, he provides excellent insurance if one of the Jets top three receivers misses time with an injury.

After Holmes returns from suspension, it will be interesting to see if the last receiver on the depth chart, whether it is David Clowney, Danny Woodhead, or Aundrae Allison, ends up sticking around. I can’t image Coles is going to contribute on special teams, so Clowney or Woodhead could hang around as the #6 receiver, if they show they can become a core player on the various special teams units.

Overall, this further demonstrates how the Jets are all in when it comes to winning a Super Bowl this season. They are hesitant to risk a young player being their #3 receiver for four games, so they are going out to add a solid veteran, who has always been productive for the organization.

If this does happen and it sounds like it is going to…welcome back to New York, LC.

1. Congrats to the Lakers on repeating as NBA Champions. I thoroughly enjoyed the Celtics choking and blowing a 13 point second half lead. Don’t compare LeBron to Kobe. Kobe has five championships. However, please still come to New York, LeBron.

Jets vs. Bills Prediction

Revis

 First a few updates:

1. This has turned out to be Darrelle Revis appreciation week from the local and national media, here is a good piece by Tim Graham of ESPN.com documenting how well #24 has played this year: http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/7246/revis-rivets-receivers-like-none-other

Jets vs. Bills Prediction

Quick predictions on the game, which is only 5 hours from kickoff. I feel good about tonight. I don’t know why, I just do. Nobody is saying the Jets are going to steamroll an improved Buffalo team. However, I think it is a nice benefit to play inside in front of a neutral crowd. Expect to see the defense build off last week and continue to play well. Buffalo has a makeshift offensive line, yet still has been taking more shots down the field in their passing game, which should open up some opportunities for the Jets pass rush. Revis vs. Owens? I predict TO has 3 catches for 20 yards.

On offense, I think Sanchez will play well. This is a big test for him on national television, going against a team who embarrassed him last time they met. The Jets offense is going to run through Thomas Jones with a little Shonn Greene and Danny Woodhead sprinkled in, but I do think they will hit a few plays down the field in their passing attack. Braylon Edwards has been a beast in primetime the past two years and I think he gets his first 100 yard game as Jet tonight.

Final Prediction: Jets – 20 Buffalo – 17

Jets vs. Saints: Prediction, TOJ TV Episode IV

First a few updates:

1. Don’t expect to see either Lito Sheppard or Donald Strickland on the field this Sunday. Hopefully, like Calvin Pace they will be rejoining the defense next Monday night in Miami.

2. Some interesting quotes about Vernon Gholston by defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, “The plays that he’s gotten, especially when he got in more in the last game, he’s graded out well. Vernon’s not a guy that you’re going to see a lot of flash from, but he’s strong…If you go back and look at some of the quarterback pressures we got, a lot of them happened because Vernon kind of collapsed that side of the defense and had taken up two blockers and the running back and the quarterback. Vernon has really taken it upon himself to get better and he’s really done it out in practice…It showed in the game. He made some really nice plays.” Usually you think of a flashy guy when you spend the #6 overall pick in the draft on him, unless he is an offensive lineman. However, at least Gholston is moving towards being a solid all-around contributor for this defense.
