New York Jets Deep Dive – The Wide Receiver Position

Joe Caporoso with a deep dive on the New York Jets current situation at wide receiver

The New York Jets have been a work in progress at wide receiver for a seemingly endless amount of time. There have been a few one off years of production (hello, 2015) but the reality is that in this decade the Jets have had two receivers exceed 1,000 yards in a single season and they both happened in 2015 (Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker). Going back even further, since 2000, the Jets have only had three other seasons where they had a 1,000 yard receiver (Jerricho “Gawd” Cotchery in 2007, Laveranues Coles in 2006 and 2002)…that is a staggering lack of production in a league that is becoming increasingly offensively dominated and pass happy.

Heading into 2019, the Jets have their quarterback in place but there are questions about the supporting cast around him, particularly at wide receiver. Let’s take an inventory of what they currently have and how they could improve to make life easier for Sam Darnold.

TOJ Pick Six: Free Agents For New York Jets Connected To Coaching Staff

Dalbin Osorio with six free agents connected to the current New York Jets coaching staff they could target

The Pick Six is back like we re-signed Ryan Fitzpatrick, as we turn our attention to arguably the most important off-season for the New York Jets. Faster than Paulie can lose a round to me in What’s Your Point, the beginning of the league year is a week away. Armed with almost $100M in cap space, and a few difference makers set to potentially hit the market, the New York Jets need to be in on just about everybody as they try to end playoff drought that’s nearing TEN seasons. Instead of giving you only guys that I would target overall, I wanted to give you a list of guys the team can realistically  target that have a connection to the current coaching staff. Let’s do what Sam Darnold shouldn’t do on his first snap next season, and return this pick six:

New York Jets Free Agent Targets – Edge Defenders

Cole Patterson ranks the top edge defenders for the New York Jets to pursue in free agency

As the new league year looms, the Jets are positioned to make a splash in free agency. With twenty-three unrestricted free agents on expiring contracts and ~$100,000,000 in cap space, the team has a lot of holes to fill and a lot of money to make it happen. This is old news. As we’ve seen in years past, cash doesn’t fill holes, players do. It is up to Mike Maccagnan and his staff to properly utilize their plentiful resources and stock the roster with talent. This group’s success in free agency has been middling at best. That being said, there is an abundance of talent available in the areas of the Jets’ biggest needs. We will be taking a look at these areas of need over the next few weeks and the players available at those positions. This week: the edge defenders.

New York Jets – Top 5 Free Agent Linebacker Targets

Stephen Russo ranks the top free agent linebacker targets for the New York Jets in free agency

The NFL is an offensive league. Plain and simple. The New York Jets have neglected the offensive side of the football for far too long, and the game has surpassed them. There is no question that the Jets should invest most of their capital (draft, free agency, trades) on offensive weapons to surround Sam Darnold with. However, this doesn’t mean that you can completely neglect the defense. Jets fans have witnessed far too many late-game situations where their defense has folded in big moments (see 2018 Browns, Titans, Texans, Packers games).
