Nikki Charlesworth reviews the performance of New York Jets UDFAs…
Last preseason, we featured each of the rookies drafted or signed as an UDFA, breaking down their college career, strengths, weaknesses and potential. Despite the temptation, as a knee jerk reaction, to write off the entire team, last year’s groundwork is still relevant, as a number of these rookies showed great future potential. They may not have all had immediate impact, but some are certainly positive building blocks. Now that the season is over, how did they fare? Lets start by taking a look at what happened to the UDFAs.

Nikki Charlesworth with a closer look at New York Jets running back Brandon Wilds
Last week, the New York Jets promoted running back Brandon Wilds from the practice squad to the active roster following the release of CJ Spiller and Jeremy Ross. Wilds saw his first action in Green and White in the week 14 victory against San Francisco, with two rushing attempts for four yards. Not the most auspicious of debuts, but with Matt Forte leaving the same game with a knee injury of, as yet, unconfirmed severity, we may see more of him in the coming weeks as part of the backfield rotation.

Nikki Charlesworth with a closer look at Austin Sefarian-Jenkins…
The tight end position has recently become all but extinct in the Jets offense. In 2015 there were only 8 total catches by a tight end, so far this year there have been none. The team started 2016 with no notable tight ends on the roster, after letting Jace Amaro, previous draft pick and high hope, go in the off season. In week four, prior to the Seattle match up, the Jets claimed Austin Seferian-Jenkins off waivers, following his release from Tampa Bay. With injury to Eric Decker, extra offensive weapons are sorely needed and we may see Seferian-Jenkins debut in green and white against the Steelers.

Nikki Charlesworth on the value shown by Matt Forte so far this season…
The Jets offense were on fire against the Bills in week two, and with three touchdowns in that game, Matt Forte is cementing his position as a key weapon. His 196 yards over the first two games rank him fourth in the league in rushing and contribute greatly to the Jets entering week three ranking fourth in total offense. Unsurprisingly, he was awarded Fed Ex Ground Player of the Week for his triple touchdown performance.

The Bills proved themselves a different level of opponent but in the short week there was a lot of work to do. Getting a win against the Buffalo was a clear upgrade on the opening weekend experience, but did we see improvement with the problems that the Jets can’t afford looking ahead to some challenging match ups? Lets take a look at four of them.

Nikki Charlesworth with a closer look at Jets rookie RT Brandon Shell
The Jets’ offensive line has a been an area of increasing concern for some time as a positional group with aging talent and limited depth. The retirement of starting left tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson, despite being past his prime, and the placement of nine year vet Breno Giacomini on the PUP list has exacerbated the situation. Clearly keen to add depth to this shaky group and begin to build for the future, the Jets traded back into the fifth round of the draft to pick up South Carolina’s Brandon Shell. Lets take a closer look at the player for whom the Jets gave up their 2017 fourth round pick.
