Week Eight Jets’ Defensive Snap Count Analysis

Mike O’Connor takes his weekly look at where and how often certain Jets players lined up on defense.

Going back into games to look for more insight and evidence is usually a fun and useful tactic, but it took a lot out of me to look back at the Jets-Bengals massacre.  Regardless, I came away with more interesting snap counts of defensive players in Rex Ryan’s complicated schemes and I noted where players were lining up.  For that spreadsheet, click here.  Let’s put aside the atrocious play from the Jets and look at some patterns in defensive snaps.

New York Jets -Linebackers Midseason Review

In a half a season full of ups and downs, the Jets have had many positives to take from the linebacker position. More importantly, John Idzik is getting a great grasp on what needs to be done in the upcoming offseason at the position. While one young players career is blossoming, another former star’s has been rejuvenated. Not all is perfect in Jets land though, as there are major concerns at outside linebacker. Let’s give out overall grades from the first half of the season. Continue reading “New York Jets -Linebackers Midseason Review”

TOJ Week 8 NFL Gambling Advice & Picks

Well another week has come and gone, and another losing week is in the books, as I finished week 7 a disappointing 7-8. But don’t worry, I think this is the week we turn it all around! Six teams are on bye this week, which means there are 3 less games to pick, so I’m gonna go ahead and say that means I’m able to focus more on the games that are being played and deliver a winning week! Besides, this is the first week I’m posting this column on Sunday instead of Saturday, so perhaps the change in days will be good. Ok, you’re right.. it probably won’t matter at all. Oh well. Let’s get started. Continue reading “TOJ Week 8 NFL Gambling Advice & Picks”

TOJ- New York Jets Know Your Opponent (Week 8 vs Cincinnati)

The New York Jets are coming off the third biggest victory in Rex Ryan’s tenure, as Rex finally got the proverbial monkey off his back with a win over the Patriots. The victory was extra sweet because it brought the New York Jets within one game of the Patriots for the AFC East lead. Now, the 4-3 Jets travel to Cincinnati to take on the AFC North leading Bengals. Let’s get to know this week’s opponent for Gang Green.

New York Jets – Week 7 Linebacker Grade Sheet

The New York Jets pulled off an upset against division rival New England Patriots in week seven, an effort that required contributions from every phase of the team. The front seven continues to shine, as New England was forced to run a pass happy game plan on Sunday. Opponents are struggling to develop a run game against the Jets stout defensive front, helping the secondary key in on an expected passing attack. Let’s take a look how the linebackers faired in the victory from week seven.

New York Jets Defensive Line Grade Sheet: Week 7

The Jets’ defensive line was spotlighted in pre-game intro’s on Sunday, revving up an already excited crowd at MetLife Stadium. After a slow first half saw the Jets front line create zero pressure on quarterback Tom Brady, questions started to arise.

Then, something changed. The defense came out in the second half on fire, as constant pressure quickly got Brady & Co. off kilter. The Jets appeared better prepared for the Patriots hurry up offense in the games’ final two quarters, setting a completely different tone than what was seen in the first half. TOJ- New York Jets Running Back Grade Sheet- Week 7

Grading Scale

I grade each play on a 1 to 5 scale. Loss of yardage is rated a 0, no gain is rated a 1, a gain of 1-3 yards is rated a 2, gains of 4-6 are rated a 3, gains of 7-9 yards or are rated a 4, and gains of 10+ yards are rated a 5. TDs increase your overall grade by 10 points, and fumbles decrease your score by -5. I do it like this to factor in receptions, reward positive plays accordingly, and penalize negative plays accordingly. The total from the grades of each individual play are then converted to letter grades, with As representing (50 or higher), Bs (39-49), Cs (29-39), Ds (19-29), and Fs (0-18) being given out for total performance). Performance of the offensive line and available running space is also factored in.

New York Jets vs. New England Patriots – Halftime Report

The New England Patriots have brought a healthy Rob Gronkowski and a banged up defense to Metlife Stadium this week to face the Jets. Fortunately for the Patriots, their rock solid offensive performance is hiding a defense filled with back up players. On the other end, Geno Smith and the Jets have played well enough to hang around besides a brutal pick six in the first quarter. Let’s take a look at the first half highlights. Jets-Patriots Round Two- Match-Up Central

It seems like it was just yesterday when the Jets let a win against the Patriots in their first match up of the season slip right through their hands…literally.  The drops from Clyde Gates and Stephen Hill won’t leave our minds for quite some time.  Anyway, here we are in Week Seven and round two of Jets-Patriots is shaping up to be a great one.  Let’s quickly run through what match ups are important heading into this one.
