Diversifying The Pass Rush

Dan Essien with a quick follow-up on an old take about how to assemble a great pass rush.

Two years ago I wrote about the importance of variety along the defensive line particularly when it comes to establishing a consistent and effectiveness pass rush. Several teams have exemplified the value of this approach since then. I’m bringing it back partly to explore new examples for further emphasis. I’m also revisiting this topic because Robert Saleh and the new regime will value edge pressure more than the previous one did. FINALLY.

New York Jets Free Agency Tracker

Follow along as we track reported Jets signings:

Day 3 – 11:55: Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reported this morning there is a possibility the Bears cut Pro Bowl CB Kyle Fuller. If the Bears do move on, Joe Douglas should pick up the phone immediately. The 2X Pro Bowler/1X All Pro corner would be a massive boost to a position of need for the Jets. With the exception of 2016, Fuller has played in 16 games every season dating back to his rookie season in 2014. The durability factor is huge here and worth the risk even though Fuller is headed into his age 29 season. A few other targets I’d like the Jets to make a push for include Juju Smith Schuster, Adoree Jackson, Melvin Ingram, & David Andrews. Kenny Golladay is a dream signing that I don’t think is realistic but would love to be wrong. Expect a ton of movement post 4pm when the new year league begins. (SZ)

1:10pm: Adam Schefter reported that CB Shaq Griffin has agreed to terms with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The contract is a reported 3-year 44.5 million deal with $29 million guaranteed. Griffin was an interesting CB option for the Jets but has never been a true lockdown CB1. His contract is nearly identical to the one the Jets handed Carl Lawson except Griffin has a much smaller track record of success compared to Lawson. The Jets should pivot to William Jackson, Patrick Peterson, and Richard Sherman to help address the secondary. (SZ)

Day 2- 10:04am: The Patriots are not done, they have now added TE Hunter Henry to the fold. Henry is an athletic and physical tight end. He is one of the best in the game when healthy and the Pats will now pair him with Jonnu Smith as a duo that will likely give the Jets nightmares for the next few years. (DP)

6:49pm: Ian Rapoport has reported WR Kendrick Bourne has signed with the Pats. He will get 22.5 million over three years. The Jets were reportedly interested in Bourne and now they lose him to the Patriots. I was sure Bourne would be a Jet, so now the team has to decide, take a shot on a legitimate WR1, or play it safe with one year fliers again? (DP)

6:24pm: The Patriots continue their spending spree and ink WR Nelson Agholor. The speedy receiver likely would not have been a Jets target, but adding him to the fold in the division is something the Jets should take note of. As of this evening, the Jets have yet to target a receiver themselves, one has to wonder how long they will wait to make a move themselves. (DP)

3:05 PM: The New England Patriots have signed Ravens OLB Matthew Judon. I thought, for sure, the Jets would be in on him considering their lack of anything at OLB and the emphasis on OLBs in new Head Coach Robert Saleh’s defense. Judon had 39 QBDs (quarterback disruptions = hits + sacks + hurries) on 302 pass rushing snaps last year, which averages out to about one every 8 snaps. He has the potential to be Bill Belicheck’s new Jamie Collins and, with the signing of TE Jonnu Smith, the Patriots seem motivated to make sure the new King of the AFC East isn’t up there for too long.

2:35 PM: NFL Network’s Peter Schrager reported that the Arizona Cardinals are a name to watch in the race for C Corey Linsley.  Linsley has long been linked to the Jets as he is a seamless fit in this offense and they desperately need to upgrade their IOL.  Jets likely need to reset the Center market to land Linsley and it is imperative they land one of Linsley or OG Joe Thuney.

2:02pm: Ian Rapoport of NFL Network has reported the Patriots are making a push to sign former Ravens pass rusher Matt Judon. Judon has 15.5 sacks in the last two seasons and would bolster the Pats pass rush in a big way. The Jets have remained relatively quiet in the first two hours, where as the Pats have come out guns blazing. They will look to bring Judon into the fold among their other early additions. (DP)

1:01pm: Adam Schefter of ESPN has reported the New England Patriots have reached an agreement with Titans TE Jonnu Smith on a 4 year 50 million dollar deal with 31 million guaranteed. Smith was near the top of the NFL in red zone scores and efficiency last season, giving the Pats a massive threat on the offensive side of the ball who will be tough to defend. (DP)

11:24 AM: Rich Cimini of ESPN New York reported that the WR Kendrick Bourne and CB K’Waun Williams of the 49ers are on the Jets radar. Neither player is going to wow you but both are solid additions who have familiarity with Robert Saleh. Kendrick Bourne can provide depth at receiver as the 3rd or 4th option. Williams is a Jersey native who played in Saleh’s scheme for the last 4 seasons. He could be an intriguing #2 CB option to pair with a top tier guy like Griffin or Hayward. Expect one or both of these guys to sign with the Jets during the early stages of FA. (SZ)

11:00 AM: Tom Pelissaro of NFL Network reported that the Jets will work hard to sign a RB this FA and specifically mentioned Jamal Williams.  Williams will  not return to Green Bay given Aaron Jones new deal and would be a great scheme fit and locker room guy for the Jets.  I expect the Jets to run a RB committee in 2021 and Williams would be a nice piece at a cheap price that I think Joe Douglas will land.  Also worth noting rumored Jets target JuJu Smith- Schuster is currently favored to go the Raiders by the Vegas bookies.   The Jets will likely add a WR in FA but will face stiff competition for the services of JuJu. (MM)

10:46 AM: Rich Cimini of ESPN has reported the Jets are expected to target Packers All Pro Center Corey Linsley and Patriots Guard Joe Thuney. Both could command record breaking deals, so the Jets would be forking over a lot of cash. This is a position Douglas values heavily though, and I firmly expect him to break the bank if it means bringing in at least one of these two. (DP)

10:44 AM: Dianna Russini of ESPN reported that both WR Corey Davis and TE Jonnu Smith are aware they will not be brought back by the Tennessee Titans. Smith and Davis have been linked to the Jets for quite some time and should be two players to keep your eye on. Two positions of need for the Jets.

10:30 AM: Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported on GMFB that the Seahawks and CB Shaq Griffin are very far apart on numbers and Griffin will test the market. The Jets need to upgrade their starting corners and Griffin would be a strong signing. The initial focus will be on IOL but CB should be the second priority once the tampering period opens at noon. Keep an eye out on Griffin as well Casey Hayward and Ronald Darby. (SZ)

10:13 AM: Dov Kleiman reported at 8:40 this morning that the New England Patriots have reopened lines of communication with reported number-one Jets target Joe Thuney. Now, I tend to believe this is just smoke to drive up what the Jets will ultimately pay for the offensive lineman, as the Patriots could’ve tagged him or resigned him at any point leading up to him hitting the market. With under two hours to go until the legal tampering window opens, this will be interesting to watch. (DO)
