New York Jets Coaching Staff Breakdown – Offensive Edition

Clayton Smarslok with an overview of the New York Jets offensive coaching staff heading into 2018

The 2018 season will be a very critical year as both Todd Bowles and Mike Maccagnan enter their fourth season at the helm. Since they were hired in 2015 there have been changes within the coaching staff at many positions on offense, defense and special teams. With a couple new hires for the upcoming season, it will be fascinating to see who makes up the New York Jets coaching staff.

Over my next few articles I will dive into all three facets of the game, starting on the offensive side of the ball. The offensive staff only has one new hire but one key departure at the most vitol position. With this being said, who is apart of the staff that plans to improve this offense from the 28th ranked unit?

New York Jets – Breaking Down the Backfield Depth

Clayton Smarslok breaks down the New York Jets battle for roster spots at running back

The NFL is long past the days of every team needing an every down back. Excluding a few teams, we are now and have been in the running back by committee era for a few years now. The last time the Jets didn’t go by this was when Thomas Jones was carrying the rock back in 2009, shortly after Curtis Martin held down the position for nearly a decade. However, that’s not to say they haven’t had a successful running game since then. Finishing in the top 12 in rushing in six of the eight seasons, with three of those being in the top six.

New York Jets – Breaking Down the Depth at Cornerback

It only took four offseasons but Todd Bowles finally has what he wants at the cornerback position. It is known he likes his corners to be physical and has the ability play press at the line of scrimmage, which is something the team has lacked for a couple years now. On the outside they have Morris Claiborne coming back on his second consecutive one year deal hoping to prove he is the same player he was for the first half of the 2017 season. Now Claiborne comes in as the #2 on the depth chart rather than the top dog after Maccagnan went out and spent the big bucks to bring Trumaine Johnson over from Los Angeles. Johnson inked a 5 year 72.5 million dollar deal with 45 million guaranteed in March to join this up and coming defense. Having these two long, physical corners on the outside and Buster Skrine as the nickel back will finally allow Bowles to do what he has wanted to do this whole time.

New York Jets – Breaking Down The Defensive End Battle

Clayton Smarslok breaks down the New York Jets positional battle at defensive end

What has long been the premium position for the New York Jets, the defensive end spot has quietly lost some talent over the last couple of years. In 2015 the Jets were flushed with goods to say the least. Muhammed Wilkerson was having a career year, Sheldon Richardson was as versatile as it got for a man his size and Leonard Williams the sixth overall pick and arguably the best player in the 2015 draft. Not to mention they had one of the best nose tackles in the game with Damon “Snacks” Harrison as well. It’s unfortunate they weren’t able to win when those guys were on the roster but now we have a whole new cast of characters to take a look at, outside of Leo of course.

While this was a very busy offseason for the Jets, no position had more changes than defensive end. During the free agency period they released Wilkerson after not living up to the enormous contract hesigned following the 2015 season. The next move actually wasn’t until the draft. Draft weekend came along where they brought in three new guys; two rookies in Nathan Shephard and Foley Fatukasi as well as the 4th year man Henry Anderson who they acquired in a trade with Indianapolis. Those three will be fighting with Xavier Cooper for the remaining 3 spots at the position. With all of these guys in the mix, which one will come out on top?

The New York Jets 2018 minicamp is officially in the books after weeks of OTAs where much of the team was in attendance. Minicamp is an ideal time for the staff to begin install, get an eye on the rookies for potential mechanical fixes and most importantly for the quarterbacks to build chemistry with their targets.

With plenty of media on hand this week, what are the most vital things to keep an eye on heading into training camp as well as the biggest takeaways? Let’s break it down.
