Breaking Down The Play: Geno Smith vs. Oakland

The Jets have been victim to inconsistent quarterback play throughout all of Rex Ryan’s tenure with the team. Mark Sanchez had four years to lock down the job and failed to do so, leading the team to select Geno Smith in the second round of this years NFL draft. Smith, much like many rookie quarterbacks, has had highs and lows all season. It is quite clear he has an NFL caliber arm and above average mobility to make plays, but his decision making and ball security issues have haunted him. While those are the obvious aspects, he has also been put in an erratic environment.  Continue reading “Breaking Down The Play: Geno Smith vs. Oakland”

The New York Jets Big Man Report – Week 14 – TOJ

Mike Nolan grades and discusses the New York Jets’ offensive line. Here is his Week 14 look at their performance and a preview for Week 15.

Each week I will be reviewing the coaches’ tape from the previous week’s game and grading out the performance of the New York Jets Offensive Line. This grading process is the same one I use to grade the offensive linemen I have coached at the college and high school levels. To see how I grade click here. To see previous Big Man Reports, click here.  Let’s see how the big guys performed in week 14 and take a look at what is waiting for them in week 15.

New York Jets – Week 14 Linebacker Grades

Connor Rogers grades the Jets linebackers from their win over the Raiders.

The Jets pulled off a bounce back win at home against the Oakland Raiders in week 14. After witnessing an anemic offense produce zero touchdowns for two straight weeks, the defense slowly looked gassed. While the win against the Raiders was a step in the right direction, the once impenetrable run defense has taken a step back. They allowed a 63 yard touchdown run to fourth string running back Marcel Reece and let him run for over 120 yards on the day. Overall it was an up and down day for the linebacker crew, lets grade them out. Continue reading “New York Jets – Week 14 Linebacker Grades”

TOJ- New York Jets Running Back Grade Sheet Week 14

Grading Scale

I grade each play on a 1 to 5 scale. Loss of yardage is rated a 0, no gain is rated a 1, a gain of 1-3 yards is rated a 2, gains of 4-6 are rated a 3, gains of 7-9 yards or are rated a 4, and gains of 10+ yards are rated a 5. TDs increase your overall grade by 10 points, and fumbles decrease your score by -5. I do it like this to factor in receptions, reward positive plays accordingly, and penalize negative plays accordingly. The total from the grades of each individual play are then converted to letter grades, with As representing (50 or higher), Bs (39-49), Cs (29-39), Ds (19-29), and Fs (0-18) being given out for total performance). Performance of the offensive line and available running space is also factored in.

Game Balls: Jets vs Raiders, “We’re Back…Maybe”

Dan Marcus hands out game balls for the Jets 37-27 win over the Oakland Raiders

Well it wasn’t pretty but the Jets finally got off the schneid after going over a month without winning a football game, the offense came to life against a beleaguered Raiders team and carried the Jets to a much needed “W.” As far as what this means in the grand scheme of things, as of right now, not a whole hell of a lot but that could all change with a win at Carolina but let’s not hold our breaths. Without further preamble let’s paint up some Game Balls:

Initial Reaction – 37 Points?!? Jets End Losing Streak

Initial reaction to the New York Jets 37-27 win over the Oakland Raiders, which snapped their three game losing streak

While today was a literal win for the New York Jets, 37-27 over the Oakland Raiders, the more important development was the positive performance of rookie quarterback Geno Smith and rookie cornerback Dee Milliner. Keeping in mind they were playing a mediocre team, the Jets had a strong offensive and special teams performance today, with a disappointing outing defensively. A win is a win and it was nice to see them snap their three game losing streak, especially while putting up nearly twice as many points in a single game than they did the past three games combined.

TOJ Week 14 NFL Gambling Advice and Picks

Week 13 was a pretty crappy schedule from top to bottom and I didn’t have a very good read on it, so I consider myself lucky to have finished 7-8-1 on the week. This week I feel much better about my chances to have a big week and there are actually a few games I absolutely love. Like, love a lot. Love almost as much as Jeff Cumberland loves  dropping passes… ok, well maybe not that much. Let’s got on with the show. Continue reading “TOJ Week 14 NFL Gambling Advice and Picks”
