The preliminary strategy for the New York Jets quarterback position in 2015 was to start Geno Smith. He received all of the first team reps throughout the spring and summer en route to being under center week 1. The new staff, particularly Chan Gailey, knew what they had in Ryan Fitzpatrick and were content to bring him off the bench at some point early in the season if Smith struggled like he did in 2014. Bryce Petty was drafted in the 4th round as a long term developmental prospect, while Jake Heaps was signed to be a camp arm. Every head coach faces unexpected events which shake up their football team however with first the Sheldon Richardson issues and now the injury to Geno Smith, Todd Bowles has certainly been tested more than some in his rookie off season. Despite the fact that the Jets are once again front page news for the wrong reasons, even making the BBC Sports news over here in the UK (which sadly only ever reports negative NFL stories), Bowles has stuck to his guns throughout this trying time; keeping his cool and staying true to his aims.

New York Jets Debate Club: Geno Smith out, Ryan Fitzpatrick in

New York Jets Debate Club: Cole Patterson and Dalbin Osorio tee off on Geno Smith, IK Enemkpali, and Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The New York Jets Debate Club returns to tackle Geno Smith’s broken jaw and the impending Ryan Fitzpatrick era. Yesterday, a locker room fight erupted between Smith and linebacker IK Enemkpali. Enemkpali broke Smith’s jaw over what amounted to a $600 debt. Smith will require surgery and is expected to miss 6-10 weeks. Enemkpali was released. Ryan Fitzpatrick will enter 2015 as the starting quarterback for the New York Jets. With this information in hand, we at Turn On the Jets present the New York Jets Debate Club, an argument/counter-argument format, to best expound the various cases. Dalbin Osorio  and Cole Patterson tee off.
