Diagnosis: Recent changes to kick offs have dramatically lessened the impact that special teams, specifically kick and punt returning, has on the NFL game. That being said, field position is still a crucial aspect of winning in this league. The formula to achieving good field position is a solid return game and a stout defense. Unfortunately, the New York Jets have only displayed the latter over the first quarter of the season, the defense forcing a whopping thirty two punts. When it comes to the return game however, it appears that the Jets have developed a serious case of agoraphobia, or fear of leaving a safe place. In this particular case, the Jets’ punt return unit seems to fear leaving their own territory, or gaining any positive yardage whatsoever. In fact, the Jets rank 32nd in the league in average starting field position per drive (according to Football Outsiders).

New York Jets Therapy Session – Self Mutilation

Diagnosis: Winning is the cure for everything, or so the Snake-Oil Salesmen that are NFL pundits claim. However, the New York Jets victory over the Bills came at the heels of TWENTY penalties (not including one that was declined and another that was offset). Penalties are mental errors committed by a player that hurt the team as a whole. These little yellow flags are the equivalent of self mutilation for an NFL team. Despite the 300+ yard passer, two 100+ yard receivers, and the 140+ yard rusher, the Jets hurt themselves enough that the Bills managed to tie it up in the fourth. Winning can’t cure this degree of self mutilation and if the Jets keep committing penalties at this rate, the winning won’t continue much longer.

Diagnosis: Call in the Center for Disease Control. Don your HazMat suit. Stock up on the Stickum antiviral. The highly contagious scourge that is the “Dropsies” has infected the New York Jets. With a minimal incubation period, this contagion has spread like wild fire through the Jets receiving corps with dire effects.

New York Jets Therapy Session – “Offensive” Line

Diagnosis: Out of sorts is not the right word. All in all the offensive line held up well in pass protection, with only a few major gaffes. They were not porous per-say, but neither were the stout unit we expected. They seemed to get no push at all and offered no help for the beleaguered running backs. Compared to our hopes and expectations, it was an all together “offensive” performance from the men in the trenches.

This is more of an observation of a phenomenon than a true diagnosis of an issue. It has become an increasingly apparent, NFL-wide trend for players to focus on playing weight. While concern over playing weight is an issue as old as organized sports, it seems that increased levels of obsessiveness over the measurable are occurring league wide, with the New York Jets representing a microcosm of the phenomenon. This obsession with weight is reminiscent of the psychological condition, Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Cole Patterson continues his New York Jets Therapy Sessions with a look at Post-Tebow Stress Disorder

In “New York Jets Therapy Session” Cole Patterson examines a particular issue that the New York Jets face in a metaphorical therapy scenario. Treatments are prescribed from the perspective of a position of control with the franchise or through actions that have already been taken. Today’s edition focuses on Post Tebow Stress Disorder.

Diagnosis: The National Institute of Mental health says that PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) “develops after a terrifying ordeal that involved physical harm or the threat of physical harm.” The other PTSD, Post Tebow Stress Disorder, occurs under very similar circumstances. The stress and fear experienced during the brief “Tebow-Era” in Florham Park may have scarred both fans and the team.
