Ranting On Revis

First a few updates:

2. Darrelle Revis did practice today but only in individual drills. It is being reported that he met with coach Rex Ryan this morning, who will ultimately make the decision whether he plays or not. The soundbites we have heard from Revis make it sound like he’d prefer to rest the hamstring heading into the bye week, which probably makes the most sense.

Ranting On Revis

It is hard to remember the last time a Jets player has had such a sudden drop in popularity as the one Darrelle Revis has seen in the past 9 months. At the end of the 2009 season, he was clearly the Jets best player, coming off one of the best individual defensive years in recent NFL history, and couldn’t have been liked anymore by the fan base. Revis arrived as a front line star in the league, complete with entertaining commercials:

Then talk of a holdout came…then a “headache” caused Revis to miss a few plays at mini-camp…then of course, the holdout actually took place. Some fans lost a good amount of respect for Revis considering he had three years left on his deal and the amount of money he was asking for. Regardless, when Rex Ryan finally helped push both sides towards an agreement, everybody was happy to have him back. There was talk during the holdout about his ability to play at a high level or even staying healthy after missing training camp, but most of that was washed away in the excitement of the season starting and Revis’ solid performance against Baltimore in week one.

Things began to turn in week two, when Randy Moss posterized Revis with a one handed touchdown reception and he subsequently left the game with the all too predictable hamstring injury. It is logical enough that if you aren’t properly trained to chase around one of the fastest players in the NFL, you are going to get hurt.

The bottom line is that Darrelle Revis got another 4 years and 46 million dollars added on to his contract from the Jets and he has repaid them by being out of shape, continually running his mouth when he shouldn’t, and contributing nothing to their impressive 4-1 start.

It is odd because Revis genuinely seems like a good guy off the field. He has never been in trouble and prior to this year always represented the organization extremely well. Yet, why open your mouth just days after signing a new contract to talk about potentially holding out again in 2012?

“That’s a great question. If I continue to play ball like I usually do, we’ll probably be back at that same position we were this year.”

Guess we won’t have to worry about that, because the Revis of the 2009 is MIA.

Then you have Revis talking down to Randy Moss prior the Jets playing the Vikings this past week.

In the second half, you could tell he was putting his foot on the brake,” said the Jets’ star cornerback, looking forward to facing the Minnesota Vikings Monday night. “I mean, everybody knows that’s Randy. Sometimes he plays 100 percent, sometimes he doesn’t.”

I am sorry but prior to week 5 in the 2010 season, 2009 is ancient history which means Revis shouldn’t be saying anything about Moss since he missed the past two games with an injury, and oh by the way Moss did this to him in week 2 of the 2010 season:

Revis suited up and came back for the Vikings game but was a shell of his former self. Shame on him for coming back too early from the injury and not taking himself out when he was clearly ineffective and shame on the coaches for putting him out there and then not pulling him. After the game Revis had this to say about Percy Harvin beating him for a touchdown:

“(Safety) help was supposed to be there, but it came late,” Revis said. “But it was man coverage. That’s still my guy…. He made a great catch and scored a touchdown… If I was 100 percent, I think I’d be there with him.”

Don’t even mention the safety help. Nobody is interested in the excuses and you should have taken yourself out if you were less than 100 percent.

The good news is that the Jets have still managed a 4-1 start without any contribution from Revis. Right now he needs to rehab the next few weeks and worry about getting himself 100 percent for the second half of the season. Until then he shouldn’t be running his mouth and he shouldn’t be on the field.

First a few updates:

1. It is now being widely reported that Tony Richardson will be back with the team sooner, rather than later and is going to play week one against the Ravens. This is great news, as the Jets need his leadership on offense. The Jets exact final 53 headed into the regular season may not be in stone for another day or two. I like the move to sign Patrick Turner, considering his chemistry with Mark Sanchez. However, TOJ will miss David Clowney, who was kind enough to do two interviews with us. Best of luck to the Clown. The depth chart is now updated to its current situation, with the assumption of Richardson returning.

2. My Darrelle Revis story – I spent the weekend visiting a friend out in Long Island. It was my first trip out there and we went to the Hamptons Saturday and Sunday, where TOJ enjoyed being surrounded by Jets fans for a change of pace. Anyway at about 1 AM last night, two of my friends sprinted up to me at the club we were at to break the news, at which point I began jumping up and down and yelling “Darrelle Revis!”. The DJ then cut the music and made the announcement about Revis signing, which led to cheering and countless J-E-T-S chants. I felt like I was in the stadium….I rapidly began texting everyone in my phone, which then quickly died. When I woke up this morning, I checked my friend’s phone to confirm I wasn’t imagining things from the night before and here we are.

Dear Darrelle: It’s Not Me, It’s You

Dear Darrelle:

Remember when I broke things off 5 days ago? http://turnonthejets.com/2010/09/01/dear-darrelle-its-not-you-its-me/ …I told you I could have a change of heart if you signed in the next few days, and guess what? I can’t pretend I’m not ecstatic you signed and will be part of the 2010 New York Jets run to a Super Bowl. You can’t blame me for getting mad at you for a bit this August. I want a Super Bowl. Jets fans want a Super Bowl. You weren’t helping the cause but now you are back and I can dust off that #24 jersey and actually picture us stopping teams in 3 wide sets because Dwight Lowery won’t be out there.

I am still worried about you not playing to your 2009 standards after missing all of August. Yet, you have surprised us before. I never thought I’d see Randy Moss, Steve Smith, Andre Johnson, Chad Ochocinco Johnson, and Terrell Owens completely taken out of games by one individual. I guess we will see for ourselves because we are only week out from the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football. Anquan Boldin will be a nice test out of the gate but the real challenge comes in week 2 and week 3.

Randy Moss is in a contract year and you just straight up embarrassed the guy last year, along with calling him lazy in an interview. You think he will be motivated? What about Brandon Marshall in week 3? Actually, he is a head case who has been dropping everything thrown his way in recent so maybe you will be okay then. However, we need you on your game against Moss so we can come after Tom Brady at full force. New England won’t be able to stop anybody this year. They can’t run the ball but I have to admit, their passing game is going to be downright scary in 2010.

Vacation is over, 24. Every time I see a completion on you this season, I am going to get a little mad about this summer but beyond that, we are cool. So, just do what you did last year and we will be fine.

Sincerely,

Turn On The Jets

Dear Darrelle:

It has been a good run, buddy. I remember watching you back at Pittsburgh with that ridiculous punt return and keeping my fingers crossed the Jets would draft you in 2007. I knew we weren’t going anywhere with David Barrett, Hank Poteat, and Andre Dyson battling it out for reps at cornerback. When the Jets traded up for you, I wrote a glowing review of the move for MVN, which was probably read by 17 people. I could tell this was the start of something good.

Even though the 2007 Jets were one of the worst teams I ever watched on a weekly basis. It wasn’t hard to see Mike Tannenbaum had got it right by making the move to draft you. I saw your first career NFL interception in person, against the Bills. Yes, you ran into Abram Elam later in the game which let Lee Evans score a game winning 80 yard touchdown but still you put together a great rookie campaign.

You kept heading in the right direction in 2008. You clinched the game against the Dolphins in week one with an interception. You scored your first NFL touchdown when we beat down the Arizona Cardinals. You sealed our improbable late season win against Buffalo with an interception. We might have might melt down because Brett Favre quit on us but at least we had an All-Pro corner.

Photobucket2009? Wow, maybe the best individual season I ever saw a Jets player put together. I argued with people until my face turned blue that you deserved Defensive Player of the Year. Unless you watched every snap of the Jets season, you couldn’t understand just how well you played. Revis Island was no joke. You literally shut everybody down and just kept getting better as the playoffs got rolling. You embarrassed Chad Ochocinco, pulled in a crazy interception against Vincent Jackson. I can’t blame you for the Colts game. I just blame Dwight Lowery, who I now have to watch play major reps in 2010 because you aren’t going to show up.

I had your back early in this contract dispute. I was all for “Pay The Man”…check my twitter history, I swear. Yet, then you had a fake injury in minicamp and sat out a few plays. You can’t be lying to us like that. However, I gave you another chance.

Now, it is September and you are still holding out. Maybe you will still sign before the regular season starts, but I lost my faith in Revis Island. I can’t expect you to be shutting people down after taking the whole summer off. You are probably going to get hurt. Now, I am actually starting think we could see a “Ewing Theory” on the 2010 Jets. Rex Ryan and the rest of this defense is looking to prove they can survive without their best player. I think they can still get the job done.

It isn’t often the Jets are considered a legitimate Super Bowl contender and your holdout is messing with my optimism. It is messing with my universe. I can’t help but hope we start 2-0 and the Jets firmly dig in on their offer and you sit out the entire season, and we go on to win the Super Bowl without you. Then we can ship you off to Tampa Bay or St. Louis where you could wallow in irrelevancy on a terrible team and get all those Nike endorsements taken away.

Maybe, that’s harsh and if you sign in the next week I might be able to give you a second chance. You are hard to get over, #24. I can’t lie. Yet for now, I think we need to take some time off and I need to tuck away my Revis jersey in my drawer behind the old Santana Moss, Chad Pennington, and Jonathan Vilma jersey. I am sorry Revis Island, it’s not you…it’s me.

Sincerely,

Ten Things August Taught Us About The Jets

Photobucket

Follow Turn On The Jets on Facebook and Twitter (@TurnOnTheJets)

Opening night is less than two weeks away for the Jets, who only have to get “The Backup Bowl” out of the way this Thursday against the Eagles before preparation begins for the Baltimore Ravens. Here is ten things the month of August has taught us about the 2010 New York Jets:

1. Darrelle Revis Is A Stubborn SOB – When Revis said he wanted to be the highest paid cornerback in the NFL, he wasn’t playing. With his uncle in his ear, Revis hasn’t budged and appears ready to sit out the entire 2010 season unless the Jets cave in. At this point, even if Revis returns he can’t be expected to play at his 2009 level and has a high chance of getting hurt. I am sorry but getting trained by some random ex high school player in the Pittsburgh area isn’t proper preparation to face Anquan Boldin, Randy Moss, and Brandon Marshall. Revis has successfully turned public Jets opinion nearly 100 percent against him but for some reason I think we’d still see plenty of #24 jerseys week one, if he signs within the next few days.

2. Two For Four – Even though it is too early to place judgements, it appears the Jets went 2/4 in their 2010 draft picks…at least for this season. Kyle Wilson is likely going to be the week one starter at corner and has looked excellent throughout training camp and pre-season. The coaching staff has raved about his work ethic and knowledge of the defense. Fifth round pick John Conner has quickly developed into one of Rex Ryan’s favorite players because he is an absolute battering ram as a lead blocker. He should have a role on the Jets offense this year before taking over as the full time fullback next season. Second round pick Vlad Ducasse was overwhelmed in training camp and likely will spend the entire year on the inactive list unless Matt Slauson can’t handle the job at left guard. Fourth round pick Joe McKnight has looked good on punt returns but beyond that runs timid at running back and can’t hold on to the football. Come back, Leon Washington.

3. Still YoungMark Sanchez improved by leaps and bounds in the playoffs last season, yet judging by the pre-season there are still going to be inconsistencies from him in 2010. I am still confident Sanchez’s stat line will be substantially improved from 2009 but there are still going to be some moments from #6 that make you wince.

Photobucket4. Ground And PoundThe Jets were the league’s number one ranked rushing attack in 2009 and there is a good chance they will repeat in the number one spot in 2010. LaDainian Tomlinson looks motivated to prove he isn’t washed up and has shown a degree explosiveness this August that has surprised everybody. Shonn Greene looks like he is ready to pick up where he left off in the playoffs last season. The Jets may not have the same amount of rushing attempts as they did in 2009 but that doesn’t mean they still won’t be a run heavy offense.

5. Cookie Monster – I don’t know what was in those cookies Kris Jenkins ate all off-season to lose weight but the big fella looks like he is poised to be even more dominant than in 2008. Jenkins is all the way back from his off-season surgery and is moving around better than I have ever seen since he joined the Jets.

6. There May Be Hope Yet For Vernon Gholston – I don’t want to be get excited about anything related to Gholston at this point but the guy put together an impressive August. At the very least, it looks like he will be a quality backup defensive lineman. Hopefully, he can take advantage of the Calvin Pace injury and become a consistent contributor to the Jets pass rush. I am not sure how much time he will see at outside linebacker for the first four weeks or if he should even see any, considering how poorly he played there and how much better he has looked at defensive end.

7. Breakout Year - I have consistently said it will be Jerricho Cotchery who will lead the Jets in receptions in 2010. Yet, the amount of times Mark Sanchez has been going to Dustin Keller this August has me contemplating changing my mind. It is feeling like Keller could be on the verge of a 65 reception season, with 6 or 7 touchdowns.

8. What The Folk? The Jets kicking situation might turn out to be okay after all. Nick Folk put together a good training camp and a better pre-season. Hopefully, Mike Westhoff has helped Folk find his 2007 All-Pro form again. While on the topic of kicking, punter Steve Weatherford has been solid all August also.

9. Danny Woodhead Won’t Go Away – It looks like the perpetual long shot will stick on the 53 man roster for the second straight year. Woodhead is versatile enough to play running back and receiver and has the skill set to be a competent special teams player.

10. We Have An Entertaining Team:

Revis, Come On Home

1. The Jets will be on the practice field at 6 PM tonight at Hofstra University and of course Hard Knocks is on at 10 PM tonight.

2. Listen in at this exceptionally long link http://www.blogtalkradio.com/football-reporters/2010/08/26/football-reporters-online-presents-pro-football-nyc — at 8 PM, to hear TOJ talk Mangold, Revis, and every other Jets topic you could possibly imagine.

Revis, Come On Home

I am fully on the bandwagon of Darrelle Revis signing a new contract by the end of the day on Thursday. I don’t care if every Jets beat writer is reporting Revis and the team didn’t meet last night. All I know is I am seeing:

  • The TIm Cowlishaw initial report about Revis signing this week.
  • ESPN 105o’s Bill Daughtry confirming the Cowlishaw report with a separate source.
  • AOL Fanhouse confirming the report with a separate source.
  • The New York Post – Revis is close to signing a 10 year, $150 million dollar deal, with $65 million dollars guaranteed.
  • CBS New York/WFAN – Revis is close to signing the above mentioned deal.
  • Pittsburgh KDKA – Reporting the above mentioned deal.
  • Multiple sources are reporting Revis recorded a television interview last night.
  • A source from OCNN giving me a strong impression that a Revis deal is coming by the end of the week.

PhotobucketWishful thinking? I don’t know but to me, it seems like where there is smoke, there is fire. I am not expecting some type of announcement syncing up with Hard Knocks. However, whether it will be tonight, tomorrow during the day, or some time tomorrow night, Revis will sign a contract somewhat near the parameters being reported by multiple media outlets. The Jets and Revis have reached their breaking point and are going to get him in by the point where he still has a chance to play at his normal level in 2010. If we start getting late into next week or after the fourth pre-season game, Revis isn’t going to be an island, for at least the beginning part of the season. He is either going to get hurt (and he still may get hurt from missing 24 days) or struggle to maintain his high level of play. Wishful thinking? Maybe, but I think Revis is ready to get back to football and the Jets are ready to cough up the money and get their best player in.

Yes, Woody Johnson isn’t commenting on the situation and either are people around the team. They did go into a media silence over the negotiations. They probably didn’t meet last night with Revis’ representatives but that doesn’t mean this offer wasn’t floated out there by one of the two sides recently and the other side saw around this date as the time to give in.

Jets Take Care Of Mangold…What About That Revis Guy?

Photobucket

Follow Turn On The Jets on Facebook and Twitter (@TurnOnTheJets)

The Newark Star-Ledger is reporting the Jets have signed All-Pro center Nick Mangold to a seven year, $55 million dollar contract, while the guaranteed money is still being negotiated, it is expected to be over $20 million dollars. Mangold now joins Pro-Bowl left tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson as the second member of the Jets “core four” to receive a long term contract from the team.

First off, this is well-deserved for Mangold who chose not to holdout of camp despite his displeasure with his contract. Unlike Darrelle Revis who has three years left on his contract, Mangold was entering the final year of his deal but still showed up to work everyday. The Jets did the right thing by not waiting until after the season and fast tracking the Mangold negotiations. It is getting harder to say the Jets “don’t take care of their own” after the monster deals they have given to Ferguson and Mangold in the past few months. The Jets have been in communication with the representatives of David Harris and both sides have agreed that because of the CBA constraints, they would be better served negotiating a new contract next off-season, when Harris will be the Jets number one priority.

So, what about that Revis guy? Tim Cowlishaw stood by his source and his report about a new deal coming Wednesday on ESPN Radio today. Everybody else who reports football for a living is adamant that nothing is about to occur, so I suppose we will just have to wait and see what happens.

Personally, I can’t fathom a scenario when a deal is not reached before the regular season starts. Is Darrelle Revis going to risk giving up two full years in the prime of his career? You can say, Revis will just wait until the Jets struggle without him (like against the Patriots in their spread formation week 2) and then use his increased leverage to get a new deal. However, what if the Jets don’t struggle? Better yet, does Revis really believe he can just walk on the field in the middle of the regular season, with no training camp, no pre-season, and missed early season games and play at his normal stellar level? If Revis does that, chances are he won’t play up to the standard he set last season and chances are even better he will get hurt. He then will likely have to deal with a lockout in 2011. The guy just arrived as an elite player in the NFL, he wants to suit up in 2010 and wants to give himself a chance to be successful.

PhotobucketDue to this line of thinking, I believe Revis is ready to take what the Jets are offering. Today was the 22nd day of his holdout. He held out 21 days in his rookie season and got through the entire year healthy. It would make sense that he would be comfortable coming back right before the third pre-season game and be confident in his ability to get through the season at a high level. Beyond that, maybe he also just took a look at what his agents have done for Vincent Jackson who was recently put on the roster-exempt list and is probably going to be shipped off to Seattle. Somehow I don’t think Revis is in a rush to leave the New York market and a legitimate Super Bowl contender or is interested in spending a year of his prime watching from a couch when $120 million dollars is out there for him to take.

So, in the words of Rex Ryan “come on home, Revis.”

Monday Afternoon Jets Recap

Rex Ryan press conference

  • Happy with the progress of Brodney Pool at safety and thinks he is fitting in well with the first defense.
  • Downplayed the comments by Tom Brady about hating the Jets “He knows we hate the Pariots, so what is the difference.
  • Confirmed that Mark Brunell remains the number two quarterback.
  • Confirmed they are close on the Mangold contract and talked up his importance to the team.
  • Don’t expect the Jets to sign Adalius Thomas.
  • The Ropati Pitoitua injury is a big loss…”his arrow was pointing up. I thought he would have a big year for us.”

Tim Cowlishaw ESPN Interview

  • Basically to sum it up, he remains confident in his source and still believes the deal will happen on Wednesday. He wasn’t looking for the information but when he came across it, he confirmed it with his source, who “has always been correct.” Cowlishaw heavily implied that the information came from somebody on the Revis’ side of the negotiations.  On a scale of 0 – 10, Cowlishaw put his confidence in his source at 8.5 to a 9. “This person is not going to lie or likely to be misled.” However, he seemed to protect himself slightly by saying he knows a new deal is coming, but there is small chance it could happen on a different day than Wednesday.

Jets Practice

  • Mark Sanchez – 9/10 with a TD to Braylon Edwards in 11 on 11 drills. Bryan Thomas dropped an easy interception. Edwards beat Kyle Wilson for the touchdown.
  • Nick Folk was 6/6 on field goals, with a long of 34 yards.
  • Drew Coleman signed a new 1 year deal, which locked up his spot on the 53 man roster.
  • David Harris and his representatives have accepted the Jets can’t work out a new deal for him until next off-season because of the current CBA constraints.
  • Donovan Warren is still out of practice. Brashton Satele returned to the field.

Jets About To Begin Spending Spree?

Photobucket

Even when the Jets have a day off after arguably the most boring pre-season football game in modern NFL history, there is never a dull day around this team.

A little before 4 PM today, Tim Cowlishaw reported on his twitter account the following:

“Revis and the Jets announce new deal, probably Wednesday. You heard it here first “Inside Information!”

The report was subsequently denied by Jets beat writers Manish Mehta and Jenny Vrentas. Adam Schefter of ESPN also said the information was false and nothing was imminent. Peter King also commented he has heard nothing about Revis but doesn’t discount the story because “Tim is good and could have it from the horse’s mouth.” Cowlishaw has vehemently stood behind his source, including the comment:

“Yes, it’s true I just watched 5th season of the Wire. No I’m not trying to be Scott Templeton, Don’t need to, thanks.”

This comment gives me a little more faith in Cowlishaw’s report because if you have seen The Wire, then you know nobody wants to be Scott Templeton and if you haven’t seen The Wire…take my word for it…and shame on you, go rent it.

Since the Revis announcement by Cowlishaw, it is now being widely reported by all the beat writers (but first by Jenny Vrentas, I believe) that Nick Mangold is actually a day or two away from signing a monster long term extension.

First off, good to hear about Mangold. He obviously deserves the money and handled his contract displeasure by still showing up work and not getting into a public dispute with the team. Apparently David Harris’ contract won’t be looked at until after the season, but it is still a good start by getting D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold under long term contracts before the 2010 regular season kicks off.

Of course, it would be even better to see Darrelle Revis taken care of this week. Considering Tim Cowlishaw is basically “that guy who is always on Around The Horn” and a Dallas Morning News columnist, who isn’t know for breaking major stories and he went with Wednesday as the announcement date, it makes sense that his source is associated with Hard Knocks. The HBO show was with the Cowboys in 2008, when Cowlishaw covered the team and I am assuming he stays in touch with his contacts from their time with his team.

Would the suddenly media savvy Jets work a Revis announcement into this week’s episode of Hard Knocks? I suppose it isn’t out of the question but that really sounds more like wishful thinking.

It would be nice to have Revis get two pre-season games under his belt before the regular season starts and locking down Mangold and Revis in the same week would be a media gold mine for the Jets.

In the end, the Jets are doing the right thing by rewarding Mangold with a new contract. I don’t know how viable Cowlishaw’s report actually is, but it would be foolish to completely write it off or completely believe it. I guess we will see on Wednesday and I am sure if there is a Mangold press conference for a new contract, it will be filled with questions about the progress on Revis.

Hey Cowlishaw…Don’t Turn Into A Scott Templeton

Back To Camp: Jets Thursday Recap & Venting On Secondary

First a few updates:

1. Listen to Turn On The Jets live tonight at 8PM on Football Reporters Online Presents: Pro Football NYC at this link (http://www.blogtalkradio.com/football-reporters/2010/08/19/football-reporters-online-presents-pro-football-nyc

2. Follow Turn On The Jets on Facebook and Twitter (@TurnOnTheJets).

3. The Jets have special teams practice at 4:15 today, an 8:20 AM practice tomorrow and then off on Friday in preparation of their pre-season game in Carolina Saturday Night at 8 PM. After how much the starters played on Monday night, don’t expect to see any first unit players get any reps outside of the first quarter.

4. Of course, Hard Knocks 10 PM tonight.

Thursday Practice Recap

The Good – Plenty of work for the second team today, with a few starters getting the day off and many getting limited reps. James Ihedigbo and Vernon Gholston both recorded sacks of Mark Brunell. Steve Weatherford got a shot to kick field goals today and hit all three (33, 38, 43 yards).

The Bad – There was another fight at practice today, this time between Matt Slauson and Matt Kroul. Rob Turner and Shaun Ellis were also exchanging some heated words…I think the players may be itching to leave Cortland full time. Marquice Cole was called for pass interference, extending the offenses’ two minute drive.

Play of the Day – Laveranues Coles had a one-handed grab of a Mark Brunell pass during the two minute drill.

Sanchez Stats – 6/11, No INTs, No TDs

Injury – Nick Mangold was back on the practice field today after missing the pre-season game against the Giants with a headache.  John Conner (knee) and Jason Davis (ankle) both had limited reps at fullback. Donovan Warren has a head injury. Lance Laury got stitches on his lower lip after the Giants game. Bart Scott, Matthew Mulligan Mike DeVito and Brandon Moore were given the day off.

Depth Chart – With Brandon Moore out today, Vladimir Ducasse worked at left guard while Matt Slauson worked at right guard. Kenwin Cummings filled in for Bart Scott at inside linebacker. Mark Brunell was back to working with the second offense.

Rex Ryan Press Conference Highlights -

  • Disappointed with practice, thought it was sluggish. Too many false starts penalties.
  • No movement in left guard battle, thought both played well.
  • Said Joe McKnight needs to learn sometimes to just “get three yards and give us what you got in between the tackles.”
  • Praised Danny Woodhead’s courage and toughness.
  • Praised Kyle Wilson’s ability to learn defense and how coachable he is.
  • Would like to see more of Brashton Satele and Josh Mauga at linebacker.
  • He has been impressed with Jason Taylor’s ability to stop the run.
  • Said he believed Tony Dungy “unfairly judged him” and left him a message to call him and come visit camp.

Revis Update – Nada…and Dwight Lowery, Drew Coleman, and Marquice Cole are all still battling for the “David Barrett Award” given to the Jets corner who is beat at least 95% of the time the ball is thrown their way.

Venting On Secondary

I have been trying not to think about the Darrelle Revis holdout too frequently. Honestly, once the Jets got rolling with practice, unless it was explicitly brought up (like in Hard Knocks), it was easy to just focus on the players on the field. However, we were all served a cruel reminder on Monday night about the Jets corners, not named Cromartie and Wilson.

In case you forgot about Dwight Lowery getting beat like a drum up and down the field in the AFC Championship Game, he reminded you of his coverage abilities. In case you forgot about Drew Coleman miss timing his jump in the AFC Championship Game on a Peyton Manning deep ball before the half that should have been intercepted and his general awfulness that traces back to missing tackles that lead to 60 yard touchdowns in 2006 against the Bears, he reminded you. In case you forgot who Marquice Cole was, he reminded you that he shouldn’t be a name worth remembering on the Jets defensive depth chart.

Bottom line is the Jets can’t have players like that on the field in their nickel package against teams like the Patriots, Packers, Vikings, and if it comes to it, the Colts. The Jets spent the off-season building themselves to beat a team like the Colts, by improving their pass rush with Jason Taylor and more importantly improving the depth in their secondary by trading for Cromartie and drafting Wilson. Unfortunately, their depth is back to where it started when the league’s best corner isn’t in the lineup. I don’t know about you but I am not interested in seeing a repeat of last year’s AFC Championship Game in 2010. Darrelle Revis just intercepted some leverage from the Jets and he will likely get more if the Panthers carve up the Jets reserves on Saturday.

Guessing That Drew Coleman Won’t Be Featured In A Commercial Anytime Soon

Jets Will Finally Have A Player With Double Digit Sacks…Maybe Two

First your daily practice/Rex Ryan press conference update

1. Mark Sanchez – 8/15, No TDs, No INTs…not terrible considering it was raining all practice. There was also no reports about him fumbling…maybe he took Joe Namath’s advice.

2. Nick Folk – 6/7…good work by the kicker, who has been better than expected this August.

3. A Truce! – The Jets and Darrelle Revis’ agents issued a joint statement, saying they have cleared the air, will try to reach an agreement, and will keep all negotiations confidential. I suppose this is good news, better than the high school name calling. Maybe Revis watched HBO last night and started to miss everybody.

4. More of Rex Ryan talking up LaDainian Tomlinson and John Conner. He said Conner has a chance to unseat Tony Richardson at fullback but it will be very difficult. The Jets would be incredibly foolish to let Richardson walk. They should gradually work Conner into the offense but let T-Rich remain the de factor starter. The Jets need his veteran presence in the huddle.

5. Rex Ryan’s mom yelled at him for cursing too much on Hard Knocks. Hopefully she also yelled at him for sneaking snacks.

6. Nick Mangold sat out of practice to play it safe with his head injury. He doesn’t have a concussion but obviously there is no need to risk anything. Robert Turner worked as the first team center. Matt Slauson and Vladimir Ducasse continued to rotate at guard.

7. Good day for Danny Woodhead, who was frustrating defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.

Jets Will Finally Have A Player With Double Digit Sacks…Maybe Two

Do you know the last time the Jets had a player on their roster who recorded double digit sacks in a single season? It was way back in 2005 when John Abraham finished with 10.5. Despite having winning records in 2006, 2008, and 2009 the Jets didn’t have a player who got after the quarterback consistently enough to reach double digits. Fortunately, that is going to change this year.

Calvin Pace racked up 8 sacks in only 12 games last season. I believe with a full season of participation, in this defense, with Jason Taylor taking attention away from him, Pace will finish with 11-13 sacks. He had 6.5 in 2007 for the Cardinals, 7 for the Jets in 2008, the previously mentioned 8 last season, and will now jump to the next level. Pace is too talented not to take advantage of the pass rushing opportunities he will be given in Rex’s scheme with Taylor opposite him.

Taylor? He racked up seven sacks last season on a Dolphins defense that was nowhere near as talented as this Jets unit. Ryan will give him every chance to get 10-12 sacks. He will be out there in every pass rushing situation, lining up in multiple positions to get him the cleanest rush possible.

Finally, Vernon Gholson? Nah…If he gets 4 sacks, I’d be thrilled.
