James Kuntz with initial reaction to the New York Jets signing backup QB Joe Flacco

The New York Jets signed Quarterback Joe Flacco to a 1 year, $1.5 million deal worth that includes an additional $3 million in incentives. Flacco underwent neck surgery in April and is expected to return by September. Flacco’s signing signifies what is likely to be the final addition to the 2020 Quarterback room, which now includes Darnold, Flacco, James Morgan, and David Fales.

New York Jets NFL Draft Deep Dive – Jabari Zuniga

James Kuntz with a deep dive on New York Jets third round pick, Jabari Zuniga

Perhaps the most unpopular Jets Draft Pick of Day 2 is Florida Defensive Lineman Jabari Zuniga. Zuniga is simultaneously an intriguing and confusing prospect: despite being listed as an EDGE Rusher, Zuniga is far more effective on the interior. Adding even more complexity to his evaluation is the fact that, when lined up as a 4-3 end, Zuniga’s above-average explosiveness is often nullified by his inability to consistently react to the snap on time.

Finally, although Zuniga possesses the strength to consistently cave the pocket with his bull rush, he rarely sacks the Quarterback. The question is inevitable: how should we view a player with such anomalous versatility and evident physical talent, who consistently fails to show up on the stat sheet.

First, it’s worth examining how he performs in the two most important phases of play for defensive linemen: pass rush and run defense.

New York Jets – Top Ten Jets Day 3 Targets

James Kuntz with ten targets for the New York Jets on day three of the NFL Draft

It’s been a roller coaster of a draft so far for the NY Jets. After an eventful Day 2 in which the Jets traded down from the 48th overall pick, the Jets wound up with Baylor WR Denzel Mims, Cal DB Ashtyn Davis and Florida DE Jabari Zuniga, in addition to first round pick Mekhi Becton (OT, Louisville). Perhaps the most impressive Joe Douglas feat was turning the 48th overall pick into a talented receiver (Mims), two fourth round picks and a 2021 sixth round pick. Day 3 will be a busy one for the Jets, who are slated to pick six times tomorrow: three times in the fourth round, once in the fifth, and twice in the sixth.

NFL Draft – Deep Dive on EDGE Rushers, Can Jets Find Next John Abraham?

James Kuntz with a deep dive on this year’s edge class and where/when the New York Jets can finally boost the position…

For the last installment in my series on the most important NFL Combine tests for each position, I analyze a positional need that has plagued the Jets for the last two decades: EDGE rusher. This week’s NFL Draft serves as an opportunity for the Jets organization to reconstitute itself to the mission of investing in the most impactful positions in football, such as EDGE. As a result, it’s worth examining what testing metrics the Jets can use in order to find value at this position.

NFL Draft – Deep Dive Into CB Evaluation, Seven Jets Targets

James Kuntz breaks down prospective cornerback targets for the New York Jets in the NFL Draft and the best metics to evaluate potential success at the position

A month ago I wrote an article in which I examined the importance of Combine testing for offensive skill position players. I concluded that the metric that is most strongly correlated with success for Running backs and Wide Receivers is speed score, while, for Tight Ends, above-average testing in virtually every event besides the bench press is correlated with success. I thought it would be interesting to apply this concept to a position that the Jets will target in the Draft: cornerback.

New York Jets – The Case For Trading Up In The NFL Draft

James Kuntz makes the case on the New York Jets trading up in the NFL Draft

One of the least mentioned, but most important, takeaways from free agency is the Jets’ perilous position in the 2020 Draft. There are currently five teams picking above the Jets that could potentially take an Offensive Tackle:

Initial Reaction – New York Jets Lose Robby Anderson

James Kuntz with initial reaction to the New York Jets losing Robby Anderson to the Carolina Panthers

On Tuesday, March 24, wide receiver Robby Anderson signed a 2 year, $20 million contract with the Carolina Panthers. As a result, there is widespread consternation among Jets fans regarding the current state of the wide receiver group. I believe this anxiety is warranted and that the decision to allow Robby to leave was a grave mistake because, in addition to being a premier deep threat who draws attention away from his teammates, Robby Anderson is a well-rounded receiver with strong hands and an irreplaceable rapport with Sam Darnold.
