New York Jets Defensive Line Grade Sheet: Week 17 (Season Grades)

Frank Giasone grades out the New York Jets defensive line in week 17 and for the entire 2013 season

Sunday’s win over Miami in the 2013 season finale was a good one for Jets’ fans, players and coaches alike, as the offense put together one of its most impressive performances of the season, and the defense held the Dolphins to just seven points–a season best for New York.

And while the performance helped the Jets climb back to .500 in the final week of the season, the struggles up front persisted, as the production from the defensive line continued to deteriorate.

Another week, another average performance from the Jets’ defensive line. Despite walking away with the comfortable win on Sunday, it’s become pretty clear that the strongest assets on the defense this season have started to dip in performance during the last month, as vulnerabilities in the pass rush and against the run have started to arise.

Whether it’s injury or fatigue, the defensive line has had some issues lately. The group set a high standard for itself throughout the season, but recently it’s looked a bit rundown. The Jets four most recent opponents have broken 100 yards rushing, and the defensive line has accumulated just two sacks in that time (both against Cleveland.)

After Sunday’s loss to Carolina, it’s starting to look like nagging injuries and fatigue in the front seven have begun taking their toll on the Jets’ defense. Pairing an anemic offense with a defense that struggles to force turnovers can have that effect, as we’ve seen this defense spend far too much time on the field through 15 weeks.

Take a look at the post game stats from Sunday’s win over Oakland and there’s one thing that will likely stand out–something Jets fans aren’t used to seeing.

For the first time this season, the Jets defense surrendered a 100-yard rusher, as Oakland running back, Marcel Reece, finished the day with 123 yards on the ground. Take a closer look at the stat sheet and you’ll see a Raiders’ rushing attack that averaged 5.8 yards per carry–a season high allowed by the Jets. Neither stat is exactly a ringing endorsement an elite run defense.

But sometimes, stats can be misleading. Continue reading “New York Jets Defensive Line Grade Sheet: Week 14”

The truth is, there weren’t many bright spots in Sunday’s drubbing at the hands of division rival Miami. Rex Ryan’s team struggled once again to produce even a semblance of an NFL offense. While the majority of the blame for this one has to be deflected to arguably the most anemic offense in football, the defense also played a role, continuing to prove that it’s far from the “elite” level we have all come to expect. With each Jets loss this season, I find myself sitting down at my computer and harping on the fact that the Jets’ pass rush was once again essentially sabotaged by the declining play of the secondary. It’s become a pretty regular occurrence this season, as opposing offenses have adjusted their game plans to limit the Jets pass rushing opportunities.

And while it wasn’t as prominent in Sunday’s loss at Baltimore as it has been in other losses this season, the issue did rear its head in a couple of extremely unfortunate situations.

So instead of just talking about it again this week, I figured it best to actually show it.

The Jets continued their trend of playing maddeningly inconsistent football in Sunday’s road loss to division rival Buffalo, as much of the playoff talk from the fanbase in the weeks leading up to this game have now been replaced with questions and concerns regarding this team and its components moving forward.

It’s no secret that this team has been riddled with inconsistency. Whether it’s alternating wins and losses or the abysmal performances on the road, this Jets team is a tough one to figure out. Hidden inside this inconsistent season, though, have been a few consistencies (both good and bad) from game-to-game on the defensive side of the ball. And those trends continued on Sunday.

On a day that saw the New York Jets earn what might be the most impressive win of the 2013 season, it was no surprise that the defensive put together what may be its best all-around performance of the season.

With the monumental task of stopping Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints’ high-powered offense looming (albeit not inside the comfort of their dome), this Jets defense appeared unfazed. Brees was harassed from start to finish in this Week 9 matchup at MetLife Stadium, and despite only finishing with two sacks, the Saints’ superstar QB was clearly rattled on his way to a 52.4 QB rating–his second worst rating of the 2013 season.

There’s really no way to sugarcoat Sunday’s performance in Cincinnati, on either side of the ball. Simply put, Rex Ryan & Co. were outmatched and embarrassed on the road. Continue reading “New York Jets Defensive Line Grade Sheet: Week 8 (Midseason Grades)”

New York Jets Defensive Line Grade Sheet: Week 7

The Jets’ defensive line was spotlighted in pre-game intro’s on Sunday, revving up an already excited crowd at MetLife Stadium. After a slow first half saw the Jets front line create zero pressure on quarterback Tom Brady, questions started to arise.

Then, something changed. The defense came out in the second half on fire, as constant pressure quickly got Brady & Co. off kilter. The Jets appeared better prepared for the Patriots hurry up offense in the games’ final two quarters, setting a completely different tone than what was seen in the first half.
