The Jets continue to fill out their roster as the second and third waves of free agency storm upon us with bringing back LBs Jordan Jenkins and James Burgess.
Jenkins emerged as the Jets top pass rusher outside of Jamal Adams (quite literally the lowest bar to clear. Adams also plays SAFETY) last season. He’s played well enough throughout his tenure with the Jets to earn a second contract but he doesn’t solve all of the teams edge problems. Ideally you want to sign or draft an edge to complement Jenkins, not have Jenkins be the guy out there.
Burgess played well under Gregg Williams last year, especially considering that Jets LBs were dropping like flies out there. I’ve said it often on Twitter but Burgess is a dude. I’m not sure there’s any one thing that he does outstanding but he plays tough, he plays hard and certainly was a bright spot on a depleted Jets defense. He serves as a fine backup heading into next season. Both guys took a big step under Gregggg last season. Whether they can keep progressing remains to be seen but these are good one year deals to see if last season wasn’t just a flash in the pan.
