Another week, another loss for this Jets team. On one hand, these losses seem to get worse and worse each week. On the other hand, the tank is full speed ahead with zero stops in sight. Here are some grades for Week 13.
Remember before the season when there were actually people who actually wanted Josh McCown to start at quarterback? 17/30 for 128 yards, no touchdowns and an interception. McCown only took a couple of deep shots and missed badly on all of them. It’s almost like a 39 year old glorified quarterbacks coach…shouldn’t be taking snaps? It was dink and dunk with very little reads downfield for McCown. We all need to pray that Todd Bowles doesn’t hold Sam Darnold from us any longer this season.
Running Backs: C+
After Isaiah Crowell called out Jeremy Bates saying the Jets should run the ball more, he put together a 21 carry 98 yard day on the ground. Not bad. But he’s still a problem in pass pro and even had Kelvin Beachum blow a gasket after what appeared to be a blown assignment.
Elijah McGuire is a complementary piece but seems to be overrated by Jets fans for having one good game against the Jaguars last season. Trenton Cannon should only be limited to wheel routes and wheel routes only.
Wide Receivers: C-
Robby Anderson showed up (for lack of a better term) for the first time in a couple of weeks with four receptions for 48 yards but did have an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for spinning a ball in the face of Adoree Jackson. I’m one of the biggest Anderson fans but this has to stop. If he wants a long term contract he needs to show that he’s mature enough to get one.
Quincy Enunwa had two catches for nine yards. That is simply unacceptable. Get him downfield more with posts, nine routes, digs, etc. and stop throwing him screens with zero blockers in front of him. Jermaine Kearse didn’t register a catch and the only other receiver to catch a pass was Andre Roberts (one catch for 10 yards).
Tight Ends: B-
Eric Tomlinson was supposed to be the blocking tight end but he is below average at blocking. Chris Herndon continues to look like 2019 TE1. His stats weren’t eye popping (two catches for 31 yards) but he did have a 20 yard catch called back by a holding penalty. Herndon gets open more often than not even if he still doesn’t look 100% from his injury (he looks like he’s running in cement in the open field). Jordan Leggett had two catches for 18 yards but is slowly becoming an option in this offense that’s devoid of talent.
Offensive Line: B+
The Jets ran the ball for 156 yards at 4.8 yards a pop against a talented Titans front, although it was more outside runs and runs between the tackles weren’t very productive. Dakota Dozier filled in for a sick Spencer Long at LG and held his own there. McCown had a relatively clean pocket all game long but unfortunately couldn’t do much with it. If I’m the Jets, I start Dozier at LG the rest of the season and keep Jonotthan Harrison at center.
Defensive Line: D
I would seriously consider not playing Leonard Williams the rest of the season.
One tackle for Williams. Zero tackles for loss and zero sacks. That abysmal effort on Derrick Henrys touchdown. Henry Anderson continues to be the best defensive lineman. He had a blocked extra point, a half a tackle for loss and got good pressure on Mariota. It continues to be a tough watch for this unit.
Darron Lee continues to improve throughout this season. Against the Titans he looked quicker in his decisions, attacked the gaps with speed and even showed up in coverage. Avery Williamson is a tackling machine (nine total, five solo) and still looks like one of the best signings this offseason next to Jason Meyers (sad state of affairs). Frankie Luvu and (!) Jordan Jenkins both tallied sacks. Jenkins got good pressure off the edge all game.
After the pick six from Trumaine Johnson, the secondary dropped off a cliff. Morris Claiborne got beat like a drum. Trumaine Johnson had one shining moment then returned to his bad self the rest of the game. I’m still not understanding why the Jets played Darryl Roberts, who has been their best corner, at safety but then again a lot of moves this team makes don’t make any sense.
Jamal Adams continues to be far and away the Jets best player. He had 10 solo tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. He’s all over the field every game.
Special Teams: A+
Jason Meyers is the best kicker in football right now. He went 5-5 on field goals including a 54 year old field goal. The Jets also blocked a punt and an extra point. Andre Roberts also had a 59 yard return which resulted in zero points but was still a great return nonetheless. Promote Brant Boyer to head coach for the rest of the year.
Todd Bowles once again coached not to lose. When you settle for five field goals and the only touchdown you have is a defensive touchdown, you’re scared. You were a 3-8 football on the road against a 5-6 Titans team. There is no reason why you should be dialing back the play calling and settling for three. Calling a gimmick play on the biggest play of the game is a fireable offense.
Once again the defense collapsed in the second half. Yes it’s on the players playing the game but some of this falls on coaching. Making zero halftime adjustments is asinine. When the team is subliminally calling you out as a coach, it’s a sign you shouldn’t be here.
