With a quarter of the NFL season finished, it is time to look at the NFL betting odds for both Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year and where it makes the most sense to place your action. Many things can still change throughout October, November and December but a few clear frontrunners are already getting ahead of the pack. Here is a quick overview of each side of the football with three players to watch for each:
The current leader on the offensive side of the football in most places isl is Baker Mayfield. He has already shown an ability to compile eye catching stats in a suddenly high powered Cleveland Browns offense. When you combine that with the reality that every Browns win is going to turn heads considering their performance in recent years, Mayfield is unquestionably the safest bet. Outside of him, two longer shot players to keep an eye on are Falcons receiver Calvin Ridley, who has shown an incredible nose for the red zone and Patriots running back Sony Michel, who is slowly becoming the feature back on a team who is likely to win at least 11 games. If Mayfield or none of the other rookie quarterbacks run away with the award, either of these two skill position players could steal it.
On the defensive side of the football, Chargers safety Derwin James is starting to run away as the favorite. The rookie already has three sacks and an interception and is showing no signs of slowing down on a loaded defense. Denver’s Bradley Chubb and Chicago’s Roquan Smith are two other players to watch. Both are on strong overall units and have the ability to make enough flashy plays to catch the attention of voters. Chubb should continue to see favorable matchups playing alongside Von Miller and the same goes for Smith, playing alongside DPOY Favorite Kahlil Mack.
