New York Jets – 53 Man Roster Projection (August 27th Edition)

Joe Caporoso with an updated 53 man roster prediction for the New York Jets (August 27th Edition)

Another swing at the New York Jets 53 man roster heading into their final preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles

Quarterback (2) – Sam Darnold, Josh McCown

Sam Darnold is starting week 1, it is just a matter of when Todd Bowles publicly announces it (Sunday?). The Jets will be spending the next week or so aggressively exploring trade options for Teddy Bridgewater. There is a chance they don’t find a suitable one and hold out on moving him to before the regular season deadline while seeing if any quarterback injuries occur.

Running Back (4) – Bilal Powell, Isaiah Crowell, Trenton Cannon, Lawrence Thomas

The Jets start the season with Elijah McGuire on the short term IR and keep Cannon despite his fumbling problems on special teams. When McGuire returns, the Jets look at moving Cannon down to the practice squad.

Tight End (4) – Eric Tomlinson, Neal Sterling, Clive Walford, Chris Herndon

The Jets part ways with disappointing second year player Jordan Leggett but keep four total players here to start the year. If Herndon progresses in the early part of the season and stays healthy, the Jets could cut ties with Walford in late September or October.

Wide Receiver (6) – Robby Anderson, Quincy Enunwa, Jermaine Kearse, Terrelle Pryor, Charone Peake, Andre Roberts

The Jets give out the last two spots after the four obvious ones to players who will bring special teams value. Peake is first team on all of the coverage and return units and has actually produced as a receiver in the preseason. Roberts is the most stable option at returner. Chad Hansen had a dud of a summer and despite playing well, Tre McBride can’t match the special teams value of Peake/Roberts in a roster spot that is there exclusively for that reason (WR5, WR6 and a potential WR7 are barely playing offense, if ever). ArDarius Stewart begins the year with a suspension and could be moved to the active roster after it ends, although he has not shown anything to merit a spot on this team.

Offensive Tackle (4) – Kelvin Beachum, Brandon Shell, Brent Qvale, Ben Braden

Look for the Jets to sign a tackle off the waiver wire to potentially replace Braden.

Offensive Guard/Center (5) – Spencer Long, Brian Winters, James Carpenter, Travis Swanson, Dakota Dozier

Jonotthan Harrison narrowly misses out on a roster spot, as the Jets decide to keep Swanson and Dozier as the primary interior backups.

Defensive Line (6) – Leonard Williams, Steve McLendon, Nathan Shepherd, Henry Anderson, Mike Pennel, Folorunso Fatukasi

Fatukasi narrowly beats out Xavier Cooper for the final spot in the defensive line rotation.

Inside Linebacker (4) – Darron Lee, Avery Williamson, Neville Hewitt, Kevin Minter

Kevin Pierre-Louis returns to a roster spot after his one game suspension, potentially knocking off Minter. Hewitt has done enough this summer to be the top backup at inside linebacker.

Outside Linebacker (5) – Jordan Jenkins, Brandon Copeland, Josh Martin, Dylan Donohue, Frankie Luvu

The Jets are hoping Luvu or Copeland can provide some type of speed off the edge but this position needs to be completely revamped in the coming offseason. This is also a position the Jets could make an addition to via waiver wire addition or trade.

Cornerback (6) – Trumaine Johnson, Morris Claiborne, Buster Skrine, Derrick Jones, Parry Nickerson, Daryl Roberts

The Jets cut bait with Juston Burris and Jeremy Clark. Rashard Robinson could potentially knock Roberts off the roster when he returns from his four game suspension.

Safety (4) – Jamal Adams, Marcus Maye, Doug Middleton, Terrence Brooks

Rontez Miles is currently on the PUP list and is likely to begin the season there before potentially being activated in the middle of the year, which could cost Middleton or Brooks a spot.

Specialists (3) – Lachlan Eduards, Thomas Hennessy, Jason Myers

The Jets go with the veteran at kicker.
