The New York Jets selected Virginia State running back Trenton Cannon with the 204th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Here are a few initial thoughts:
The Jets added to their running back group drafting Trenton Cannon with their final pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. Cannon is a slightly undersized running back at 5’11” 185 lbs but he dominated at the D-II level. In his final season at Virginia State he had 1638 yards on 212 carries and 17 TD’s. He also returned two kicks for touchdown.
At his pro day, Cannon impressed with his speed. He clocked a 4.40 40-yard time with a 1.49 second 10 yard split. For comparison, previously drafted Parry Nickerson ran a 4.32 with a 1.50 second 10 yard split. That means Cannon can accelerate as fast as one of the fastest cornerbacks in this year’s draft.
It may take some time to see what Cannon can do at RB in the NFL. I don’t think he’ll challenge McGuire for snaps in his first year. But he immediately gives the Jets help on special teams as a returner.
Here’s some highlights from Cannon:
