In their State of the Union’ address at the combine, Todd Bowles and Mike Macagnnan said that they have several backup plans for their QB position. While Kirk Cousins is Plan A, there have been talks of a ‘Teddy Bridgewater/Josh McCown’ Plan B which is just gross.
If the Jets miss out on Kirk Cousins here is my plan as to how the Jets can still steadily improve
Trade Up For A QB
This might ultimately be the best plan of action as it involves getting the QB who they love most in the draft. Unfortunately it means they will have to trade up to either picks 3 or 4 to acquire either Josh Rosen or Baker Mayfield. With moving up the Jets will at least need to move their second round pick and probably more. Because of this they will need to be aggressive in free agency to address their plethora of roster needs, which I have detailed below.
Sign Ryan Jensen or Weston Richberg
These two young centers are both going to command a lot of money but will instantly make the Jets offensive line better. the guards will no longer have to pick up the slack for Wesley Johnson and the interior line will again be a strength.
Sign one high level corner (either Trumaine Johnson, Kyle Fuller or Malcolm Butler) and one lower level such as (Aaron Colvin, Rashaan Melvin or Mo Claiborne)
These will be expensive signings but remember, in this scenario the Jets didn’t pay 60 mil to Kirk Cousins so they have 90 mil in cap space. Unfortunately they miss out on a solid CB draft but by signing two of these six players they help make Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye’s job easier. It will also allow Todd Bowles to have more time to do creative blitzes by knowing he won’t be relying on Juston Burris or Marcus Williams trying to cover number 1 WRs.
Re-sign Austin Seferain-Jenkins or Trey Burton
Both should command a contract right around the same amount of money. ASJ tapered off towards the end of last season but if he is willing to take a pay cut, I believe he would be a solid choice. With Quincy Enwuna returning I think it will help add more to the passing game and should take some attention away from ASJ. Burton is much more athletic but with his upside he also might be more expensive. Regardless Jets should be able to afford either one.
Sign Alex Okafor
Unfortunately, the one year the Jets can shell out money for a pass rusher, there isn’t one available. However Okafaor is more than serviceable and can be a tandem rusher with Josh Martin/Kony Ealy/ or *hopefully* a second/third round pick
Resign Josh McCown (AS A BACKUP), re-sign Demario Davis
*Premier FA choices*
These two players would be legitimate stars and arguably would be the best players if we were able to sign them. If Tyrann Mathieu or Allen Robinson show interest (and both could make sense) than immediately either cut Buster Skrine or Jermaine Kearse and lock these players up. Adding still young players who have succeeded at high levels would be a great influence to this team.
Draft a running back with your other second pick – if Jets still have a second round pick use it on Sony Michel, Ronald Jones, Derrius Guice.
With this plan here will be the Jets 2018 starting roster
- QB- Baker Mayfield/Josh Rosen
- RB- Bilal Powell, Elijah McGuire, Sony Michel/Ronald Jones/Guice
- WR- Quincy Enwunwa, Robby Anderson, Allen Robinson/Jermaine Kearse
- TE- Seferian-Jenkins/Trey Burton
- OT- Beacum, Shell
- OG- Carpenter, Winters
- C- Richburg/Jensen
- DE- Leonard Williams, Xavier Cooper
- DT- Steve McClendon
- OLB- Jordan Jenkins, Alex Okafor
- ILB-Darron Lee, Demario Davis
- CB- Johnson/Fuller/Butler, Claiborne/Melvin/ Colvin, Matthieu/Skrine
- S- Jamal Adams, Marcus Maye
This team is a much more solid mix of young explosion on offense at premier positions (QB and RB) while including some younger but talented and proven Free Agents (Center, Tight End, Corners)
If Maccagnan and Chris Johnson are ready to put on their recruitment hat and open the piggy bank, I won’t feel too bad about the Vikings taking Cousins from us.
