Bowl Game Prospect Viewing Guide: Gasparilla Bowl

Joe Malfa with a prospect viewing guide for the Gasparilla Bowl, featuring Temple vs. FIU

‘Tis the season for over 40 college bowl games sponsored by some very obscure companies to celebrate the mediocrity of 6-6 teams. Surely there is an angry old man somewhere waving his fist screaming about how “everyone gets a trophy” and “the Millennials are ruining everything.” At TOJ, we love bowl season. Maybe not for the games because watching Western Kentucky against Georgia State is not very appealing, but it gives us a chance to watch some teams that we did not get a chance to watch this season and evaluate some prospects who may not have been regularly exposed to us.

Gasparilla Bowl

Matchup: Temple vs. FIU

Time: 8:00 p.m.

Network: ESPN

Temple’s prospect:

  • FB Nick Sharga

Career stats: 39 carries, 150 yards, 1 TD

A fullback? A fullback! These things still exist despite the league becoming pass-heavy. Teams like the Patriots and the Saints use them regularly, and there seems to be a “fullback renaissance” going on as more teams have rostered and utilized them regularly. Sharga will either be a 7th round pick or an undrafted free agent. Maybe the Temple coaches will throw him a bone and let him pound one in at the goal-line tonight.

FIU’s prospect:

  • QB Alex McGough

2017 stats: 65.3% completion pcercentage, 2,791 yards, 17 TDs, 8 INTs, 7.88 YPA

Career stats: 59.5% completion percentage, 9,084 yards, 65 TDs, 37 INTs, 6.78 YPA

McGough is your prototypical late-round project that you hope develops into a serviceable backup. The 6-foot-3, 218-pound senior has average traits across the board. Nothing stands out as particularly good, and nothing stands out as particularly bad. He will likely end up going undrafted. Even with a great draft process, he will not climb higher than the 6th round.
