Every Wednesday or Thursday during the 2017 season, Joe Caporoso will break down the upcoming week of NFL action. Unfasten the belts and prepare to gorge on another weekend of fandom, fantasy, gambling, tweeting, cheering, complaining…and complaining.
No Aaron Rodgers. No Odell Beckham Jr. No JJ Watt. No Deshaun Watson. No David Johnson. All of this sucks for a number of reasons but it will turn the spotlight to new faces for the NFL’s stretch run in November and December. We are likely going to see three new playoff teams in the AFC with Watson now out and if the season ended today, we’d have five teams in the NFC making the playoffs who didn’t last year. Who are the players to watch down the stretch?
In the AFC, Kareem Hunt, Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce going off would be the only hope for Kansas City finally getting over the Pittsburgh/New England hump. Leonard Fournette and Marcus Mariota are carrying fairly mediocre teams into playoff territory, along with two swarming defenses. JuJu Smith-Schuster and TJ Watt add a few new weapons to Pittsburgh’s traditional playoff roster (that generally gets stomped by New England).
In the NFC, Caron Wentz and Dak Prescott are a legitimate MVP candidates. Drew Brees is making one final run, thanks to an infusion of talent form Marcus Lattimore and Alvin Kamara…and yes even Ted Ginn Jr as a complement Michael Thomas. Todd Gurley is looking worth his draft slot on most weeks and is helping Jared Goff look like a capable starter. In a depleted NFC North, we may have a Case Keenum, Adam Thielen and Jerrick McKinnon led offense hosting a playoff game. Strange times…
A Three Team Tease Is Always A Bad Idea But…
- New England (-1), Tennessee (+1), Detroit (-4.5)
Denver is bottoming out thanks to their predictably awful quarterback situation and now has New England off a bye week. Cincinnati looks like they are giving up on the season, while the Titans are in the driver’s seat for the AFC South. It is impossible not to throw Cleveland’s opponent in teasers at this point.
- Seattle (-5.5), New England (-7)
A good team off a bye week. A good team off a bad loss at home.
- New England (-7)
Denver doesn’t have the offense to take advantage of any issues New England has on defense.
- QB – Matthew Stafford
- RB – Chris Thompson
- RB – Mark Ingram
- WR – Robert Woods
- WR – Antonio Brown
- WR – Adam Thielen
- TE – Austin Seferian-Jenkins
- K – Stephen Gostowski
- D – Pittsburgh
Overrated Snack Of The Week
Nobody wants to see or hear about your diet, particularly when you are eating this bland, flavorless “cake” that isn’t even that healthy. Despite Homer’s best efforts (see clip below), there is no good way to spice up this piece of cardboard.
