Week 9 Recap: I went 2-3, and my record for the season is now 23-22. This week, I’m going against the grain on a couple picks by taking two underdogs to win outright.
NY Jets -2.5 at Tampa Bay
The Jets are a young team that is starting to build some confidence, and I think they’re good enough to win this game by a field goal. Their secondary has become a real strength on defense, and Morris Claiborne could be returning to the field this week. Ryan Fitzpatrick might be set on revenge in this one, but I expect (and am rooting for) the Jets defense to shut him and the lifeless Bucs down. Jets win 23-20.
Washington +2 vs. Minnesota
I know how good the Vikings defense has been this year and that they’re coming off a bye, but I like the Redskins as an underdog at home. Last season, Minnesota started with a 5-0 record and looked like a serious contender. After their bye week, they immediately lost 6 of their next 7 games. I’m not sure if they’ll have that type of regression this season, but I do think they’ll struggle in Washington. Redskins pull off the upset and win 27-23.
Chicago -5.5 vs. Green Bay
As a home team, Chicago is 4-0 against the spread this season. They’ll be hosting the Packers, who without Aaron Rodgers, have looked like a CFL team at best. The Bears’ defense should be all over Brett Hundley for the majority of the game, and I don’t think the Packers have a chance to keep this one close. Bears win 26-17.
Detroit -10.5 vs. Cleveland
This one doesn’t need much of an explanation, the Browns are just that awful. Even with Cleveland getting 10.5 points, does anyone really trust DeShone Kizer to put the team on his back and keep this game close? I’m going to go with the safe route and continue to bet on the Browns being a dumpster fire. Lions win 31-10.
LA Chargers +4.5 at Jacksonville
The Chargers seem to keep every game they play interesting, so I like them getting 4.5 here against the Jags. He’s had a nice run for a while, but I think we’re finally due for a Blake Bortles meltdown game, and that could easily happen against this LA defense. I’ll take the Chargers to win this game outright, 24-23.
