Every Wednesday or Thursday during the 2017 season, Joe Caporoso will break down the upcoming week of NFL action. Unfasten the belts and prepare to gorge on another weekend of fandom, fantasy, gambling, tweeting, cheering, complaining…and complaining.
Every few days we got a collection of tweets about NFL ratings. Sometimes it is because they are up from a previous game the same week last year, sometimes it is because they are down in comparison to last year over a set time period. This has become a political football (like everything else!) now to be punted around between eggs, Russian bots and other people who have given up the NFL but then tweet about games every Sunday.
NFL ratings on the whole may be down, just like MLB ratings and just like NASCAR ratings. A myriad of factors play into rating declines, most prominently among them changing demographics, generations and how they consume content, specifically sports content. Are the ratings factoring in the number of people watching league related content on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube and Twitter and the exposure generated from that? Check out what is trending worldwide on Twitter every NFL Sunday. The way we measure things need to change because the way we consume content needs to change.
The NFL has problems but if you are tweeting a picture of a half empty stadium this Sunday and saying their business is about to die you are going to be in for a rude awakening in the coming years when every broadcast network, OTT platform and “social media” company buries them in money for distribution rights. You are also going to be disappointed as the game continues to expand internationally, not just in the UK but in other countries as well.
A Three Team Tease Is Always A Bad Idea But…
- Titans (PK), Dallas (PK), Steelers (+0.5)
Teasers have been impossible this year but this week I am betting against two teams without a win and taking the Steelers at home, where they always seem to beat the Bengals, even if the game is close.
- Patriots (-3), Chiefs (-3)
Andy Reid has done work against Oakland since taking over the Kansas City job (at least it feels like that in my head) and I’ll go with the Patriots at home against a struggling Falcons team in the Super Bowl rematch.
- Titans (-6)
Just bet against the Browns.
- QB – Marcus Mariota
- RB – Jerrick McKinnon
- RB – LeSean McCoy
- WR – Chris Hogan
- WR – Mike Evans
- WR – Keenan Allen
- TE – Evan Engram
- K – Stephen Hauschka
- D – Jets
Overrated Snack Of The Week
Time and a place. You are stuck on a long car ride or want to give off a #FakeNews impression you are trying to eat healthy? Pop some trail mix. During a game on a football Saturday/Sunday, stick to the chips, pretzels, wings and assorted dips.
