New York Jets Roster Cutdown Running Blog

A running blog of the New York Jets transactions over final roster cut down weekend…

With over 1,100 players getting released this weekend and the New York Jets in desperate need of help all over their roster, this weekend should be an active one of transaction news. We will keep this running blog updated with commentary all weekend, make sure to follow everyone on Twitter (their names will have clickable links to their account)

Joe Caporoso (9:40AM) The Jets initial 53 man roster is right here. There were no shocking moves yesterday but the roster is fluid and is likely to change today. The Jets should be active at every position outside of defensive line but receiver, tight end and offensive line are at the top of everyone’s mind today. A few names to watch: Travis Rudolph, Austin Carr, Alex Boone, Kasen Williams, and Sam Rodgers.

Kyle Fahey: (1:27 PM) The Jets have cut S Robenson Therezie

Kyle Fahey: (1:25 PM) The Jets have released LB Connor Harris

Kyle Fahey: (1:25 PM) The Jets have released OL Ben Braden

Kyle Fahey: (12:30 PM) The Jets have released long tenured LS Tanner Purdum

Kyle Fahey: (12:15 PM) The Jets have released WR Gabe Marks

Kyle Fahey: (12:00 PM) The Jets have released WR Frankie Hammond

Kyle Fahey: (11:40 AM) The Jets have released WR Dan Williams

Kyle Fahey: (11:10 AM) The Jets have released OLB Frank Beltre

Jared Scherl (10:52 AM) The Jets have released NT Deon Simon and DE Lawrence Thomas.

Joe Caporoso (9:55AM) A little further reaction to the Richardson trade here. The Jets are currently still at 76 players so today will be an active day.

Joe Caporoso (6:20PM)

No major surprises here. I guess Chris Harper may be considered a mild one but the addition of Kearse may have expedited that. Also not sure Catanzaro earned the job over Martin. Here are my 2017 NFL predictions, by the way.

Joe Caporoso: (5:00PM) The Sheldon Richardson trade is one of the best, if not the best, move Mike Maccagnan has made in the past few years. He was never getting a long term contract here with Leonard Williams and Muhammad Wilkerson already on the roster, especially after only compiling 6.5 sacks compared to 6 games suspended over the past two years and the Jets desperately needed more draft capital. The 2nd round pick is the key thing here, even though Jermaine Kearse is a decent add on. He has no guaranteed money beyond this year and will be a competent starter for the team on the outside. The Jets now have nine picks in the 2018 NFL Draft, including three in the first two rounds. As one of your bigger critics, I say well done Mr. Maccagnan.

Dalbin Osorio: (4:30PM) Getting a 2nd round pick for Sheldon Richardson would have represented great value. Adding in Jermaine Kearse, who now becomes your de-facto number one Wide Receiver, and a swap of 7th round picks makes this that much of a better deal. You weren’t going to pay Richardson as is, so moving him now made sense. Kearse slots in as veteran insurance, and this should mean the end of the sequel to Kembrell Thompkins. Kearse, also, gives the Jets a receiver a year removed from a 49 catch, 685 yard, 5 touchdown season who is under 28 years old. Kearse, lastly, gives the Jets insurance in case Quincy Enunwa is not healthy next year since Kearse is signed through next season. This, also, represents a rare win for Mike Maccagnan

Kyle Fahey: (3:10PM) The Jets have released Wide Receiver Myles White

Kyle Fahey: (3:05PM) The Jets have traded former Pro Bowl DE Sheldon Richardson to the Seattle Seahawks for Wide Receiver Jermaine Kearse and Seattle’s 2nd round pick plus a 7th round swap.

Joe Caporoso: (1:45PM) The Jets have released LB Spencer Paysinger. This is a logical move (see #4 here).

Joe Caporoso: (12:45PM) The Jets have released OT Jeff Adams (not surprising!), expect many more not surprising releases to happen in the coming hours. The most interesting bubble players? Lorenzo Mauldin, who may end up on IR. Matt Forte, who may get cut if he can’t be traded. Charone Peake, who could get bumped after waiver wire additions. Chandler Catanzaro and Mike Pennel, two of Maccagnan’s four FA signings this offseason…

Joe Caporoso: (11:00AM) – We in here! Jets fans should be ready to look forward to a long weekend of immense roster turnover and scrambling to compensate for 3 years of uneven drafting and free agent signings. The three biggest things to watch this weekend:

  • Can the Jets move Sheldon Richardson? (HI, SEATTLE)
  • What other veterans could be on their way out? (Forte, Mauldin, Skrine, Marcus Williams)
  • Can the Jets add talent to their skill position group, namely wide receiver?

My three sentence reaction to last night: Hackenberg is still no better than a third string quarterback. Throw more red-zone passes to Austin Seferian-Jenkins. Chad Hansen is going to be good but needs to change his number.
