The Final 53 Man New York Jets Roster Prediction

One final prediction on the New York Jets final 53 man roster BEFORE they kick off their pre-season finale tonight against the Philadelphia Eagles AKA “The Bollinger Bowl.” Let’s hear those disagreements down in the comment section because I know you have them! Please make sure to read the notes under offense and defense, which offer thoughts on which players could quickly be replaced by waiver wire pickups. Also the PUP, IR and practice squad is included at the bottom.

  1. Geno Smith
  2. Mike Vick
  3. Matt Simms

Wide Receiver

  1. Eric Decker
  2. Jeremy Kerley
  3. David Nelson
  4. Jalen Saunders
  5. Saalim Hakim
  6. Greg Salas

Running Back

  1. Chris Ivory
  2. Chris Johnson
  3. Bilal Powell
  4. Daryl Richardson
  5. Tommy Bohanon

Tight End

  1. Jace Amaro

  3. Breno Giacomini
  4. Willie Colon
  5. Brian Winters
  6. Oday Aboushi
  7. Dalton Freeman
  8. Dakota Dozier
  9. Ben Ijalana

Note: There is a reasonable chance the Jets pick up an offensive lineman off waivers and replace Ijalana with him. Yes, I do think Stephen Hill will be released.

Defensive Line

  1. Damon Harrison
  2. Muhammad Wilkerson
  3. Sheldon Richardson
  4. Leger Douzable
  5. Kenrick Ellis

  1. David Harris
  2. Demario Davis
  3. Quinton Coples

  3. Dawan Landry
  4. Jaiquawn Jarrett
  5. Rontez Miles

  1. Tanner Purdum
  2. Nick Fok
  3. Ryan Quigley

Notes: There is a good chance the Jets add a veteran cornerback off waivers and then release Patterson. After Dee Milliner returns from injury, look for Lewis to be released and for Trevor Reilly to be added to the active roster.

PUP: Antwan Barnes

IR: IK Enemkpali, Shaq Evans, Dexter McDougle, Jermaine Cunningham

Practice Squad:Tahj Boyd, Jeremiah George, Brandon Dixon, Quincy Enunwa, Kerry Hyder, Jeremy Reeves, Chris Pantale, Trevor Reilly, TJ Barnes, Will Campbell

  • I agree with your assessment, and lets hope your right

Is Ik truly hurt? Saunders may “get hurt” or move to practice squad, unless he shows a lot tonight. Honestly, I might keep Hill over Saunders (assuming he can be put on the PS), and Salas would be higher on the depth chart in my opinion. Patterson should be a goner as soon as waiver pick ups are available – can’t believe he got no real penalty for blowing off the team. Don’t see a need for Bohannon. Many teams don’t even use a FB, and I’m not sure we need one in this offense. Of course, I wouldn’t waste a roster spot on someone who can only long snap – a ridiculous use of a roster spot. This isn’t something that can’t be taught to someone else. Do they ever bring in any “competition” for Long Snapper? How do we even know Purdum is the best we can get? Does he keep his job until he tires of it?

  • Willie

@john c I might agree about fullback, could the jets keep pantale or sign a vet TE.
I’d cut bait on Hill as well.

  • No good case for putting Hill on the active roster, but I agree with John C that Saunders hasn’t done enough to make the 53 man squad. He should start the year on the practice squad.

  • John C

Post Game thoughts: Bye-Bye Stephen Hill. Saunders didn’t do a lot, but he did make some catches in close quarters. Hakim solidified his spot due to Special Teams. Salas is on if they keep six WRs. LeQuan Lewis was feast or famine and Ellis Lankster is probably safe, but did nothing to make me feel good about our CB situation. They may look to the Waiver Wire at CB. Richardson over Green. Simms over Boyd (though neither played very well). Hope they can get Pantale on the PS without someone taking him. TJ Barnes had a few good plays. Overall, I hope our 3rd stringers don’t have to play much – they were pretty pitiful.

  • I don’t get why you would keep Simms on the 53-man roster. He’s not good enough to win (or even not lose) a game for you (he most likely won’t be active anyway). He’s PS eligible so why don’t you stash him there. No one is going to steal a 3rd QB with limited upside. Would rather hold onto. Hill or Barnes in that spot.

This is actually a good team with amazingly weak cornerbacks.

I agree with 85% of this roster. I think its possible(likely) that they choose to forego a 3rd QB for either IK or Jeremiah George, or as a stretch even Enunwa as an additional special teams body.

Also one name only murmered on the interwebz is Ed Reed.

When Bent did some analysis on the third game he noted that on base Allen played outside, but he moved inside in nickle situations. Its possible the team carries Jarrett or Rontez for week 1, but cuts either in favor of signing Reed, moving Allen into his more effective big nickle/slot role, Reed deep, Pryor as a movable chess peice and Landry is just another depth Safety.

Theoretically the Jets could play a Hybrid 4 safety look against 22 personel as well as 3 wide sets to mask the depth problems at CB. In the past Rex has chosen to simply play the best 11 men for a situation and Reed (however old) is still a damn site better than whatever gawdawful camp cuts or free agents available at corner.

I’d never been impressed by Simms, but after watching him in the 3rd preseason game I thought he looked significantly improved. After the game last night, I don’t think he deserves a roster spot. His delivery is awkward & he isn’t very accurate or mobile. I’d keep 2 QBs on the 53 man roster & sign Boyd to the PS.

I’m also not sold on Hakim, who was made some nice plays on coverage but looks terrible as a KR & WR. I’d much rather see a rookie with some developmental potential (Enunwa, George, or Dixon) fill that role.

T-Bo still looks like a dud, & like others have mentioned, I’m not sure he improves the team or deserves a roster spot.

It’s going to be VERY interesting to see how Rex/DT scheme the secondary. With Patterson’s recent meltdown & McDougle’s injury, depth at CB is ridiculously thin (even when DM & AA return). While Patterson & Lewis may initially make the 53 man roster, I suspect one or both won’t be around for the 1st game.

  • David

All I can say is that there are going to be a lot of guys on this team that have no business being anywhere near an NFL field. Very suspect depth on the Jets to say the very least!

  • Stevesc

I know the Jets are hurting at the cb position, as does everyone else… To keep Patterson on the roster because of this is wrong, in my opinion. The guy goes awol, and in essence calls the Jets liars to boot. He has not had a preseason worth evaluating because he played so little, and when he did, was unimpressive to say the least. I doubt he will get through the season, as his history shows. Can anyone really say this guy deserves a roster spot just because he’s been named the starter? The Jets should cut their losses now because he is going to be a cancer and a distraction. I don’t think his being cut will be that big a factor in the scheme of things. I’m not sure that after this recent incident his team mates completely trust him to be there for them either. From what I’ve read, I don’t think Idzik and Ryan are buying into his excuse for going awol.

There is no way that Patterson is on the roster. He’ll be cut. I think he might be mentally unstable at this point.

There is also no way that they cut Hill. That is wishful thinking.

They might keep 3 QBs but that is really unnecessary since if we lose both Smith and Vick we won’t be able to overcome that type of misfortune. Also, Simms really isn’t that good and we’d probably be able to stash him on the practice squad where he belongs.

  • I Like see Hill make the team.

  • Another disappointing draft for John Idzik as only 4 of his 12 picks make the roster in your final cuts. Yes two otheres were already out for the season but only one McDougal was likely to make the roster as vans had not impressed any one when he was on the field.

  • Jeremiah Johnson

Now that the final cuts are in, the only real surprise for me is that Bush made the team. I can’t recall him ever having a positive impact.

I’m glad we won’t have to see drops from Hill or Gates anymore, & like that Enunwa, IK, & Reilly made the team.

  • KAsh

I think Bush was the one quarterbacking the secondary whenever he was in with the twos and threes. I agree that I do not think he was that great, but you have to remember how much Rex values defensive players that know his system.
