Even when the Jets have a day off after arguably the most boring pre-season football game in modern NFL history, there is never a dull day around this team.
A little before 4 PM today, Tim Cowlishaw reported on his twitter account the following:
“Revis and the Jets announce new deal, probably Wednesday. You heard it here first “Inside Information!”
The report was subsequently denied by Jets beat writers Manish Mehta and Jenny Vrentas. Adam Schefter of ESPN also said the information was false and nothing was imminent. Peter King also commented he has heard nothing about Revis but doesn’t discount the story because “Tim is good and could have it from the horse’s mouth.” Cowlishaw has vehemently stood behind his source, including the comment:
“Yes, it’s true I just watched 5th season of the Wire. No I’m not trying to be Scott Templeton, Don’t need to, thanks.”
This comment gives me a little more faith in Cowlishaw’s report because if you have seen The Wire, then you know nobody wants to be Scott Templeton and if you haven’t seen The Wire…take my word for it…and shame on you, go rent it.
Since the Revis announcement by Cowlishaw, it is now being widely reported by all the beat writers (but first by Jenny Vrentas, I believe) that Nick Mangold is actually a day or two away from signing a monster long term extension.
First off, good to hear about Mangold. He obviously deserves the money and handled his contract displeasure by still showing up work and not getting into a public dispute with the team. Apparently David Harris’ contract won’t be looked at until after the season, but it is still a good start by getting D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold under long term contracts before the 2010 regular season kicks off.
Of course, it would be even better to see Darrelle Revis taken care of this week. Considering Tim Cowlishaw is basically “that guy who is always on Around The Horn” and a Dallas Morning News columnist, who isn’t know for breaking major stories and he went with Wednesday as the announcement date, it makes sense that his source is associated with Hard Knocks. The HBO show was with the Cowboys in 2008, when Cowlishaw covered the team and I am assuming he stays in touch with his contacts from their time with his team.
Would the suddenly media savvy Jets work a Revis announcement into this week’s episode of Hard Knocks? I suppose it isn’t out of the question but that really sounds more like wishful thinking.
It would be nice to have Revis get two pre-season games under his belt before the regular season starts and locking down Mangold and Revis in the same week would be a media gold mine for the Jets.
In the end, the Jets are doing the right thing by rewarding Mangold with a new contract. I don’t know how viable Cowlishaw’s report actually is, but it would be foolish to completely write it off or completely believe it. I guess we will see on Wednesday and I am sure if there is a Mangold press conference for a new contract, it will be filled with questions about the progress on Revis.
Hey Cowlishaw…Don’t Turn Into A Scott Templeton
